1939-2013
Barbara was born in Montreal, Quebec on March 10th, 1939. She was the only child of
Joseph Steele and Rhoda Gore Steele.
As a young child, she moved with her mother to ''Castle Gardens'' in St-Hubert. She lived
with her mom, grandmother and Aunt. She grew up with her Uncle Lloyd Gore who was like
a brother to her because they were only a few years apart in age. Lloyd married Doris and
they had two daughters, Linda and Donna.
Barbara attended Kensington Elementary School and Chambly County High School.
Barbara was a member of the Girl Guides .At age 16, she received a silver medal for
bravery and a letter of recognition, the 2nd highest award in Canadian guiding.
Barbara, along with Jeanne Docherty, Bill Docherty and Ronald Gordon, were honored for
their bravery in attempting to save two children trapped in a house fire.
At the age of 16, Barbara began working for Birks Jewelers in Montreal. On June 10th,
1961 she married Ernest Tannahill, a volunteer firefighter for the district of East
Greenfield, St-Hubert. Ernie went on to become the Fire Chief of that district. Their
wedding reception was held at the Fireman's Hall. For many years, Barbara was a volunteer
dispatcher for the Volunteer Fire department and also helped with fund raising to provide
needed equipment.
Barbara and Ernie's first child Larry, was born on May 22nd, 1963. Three years later, on
November 9th 1966 they had a daughter, Rhonda-Lynn and then their family was complete.
Barbara was a stay-at-home mom and homemaker. She took on part time babysitting jobs.
She also was good at sewing and did sewing repair jobs for people in the area.
She was not afraid of challenges. She drove trucks, trailers, motorcycles and on old Chevy
pick-up truck with doors that would not open. She would simply climb out of the window.
Barbara was never afraid of work. She helped Ernie with any household or yard projects
that needed to be done. Together, they dug six foot holes to install C.B. and radio
antennas, spread tones of stones while building their garage, fixed old cars, built stone and
wood patios, painted and moved furniture. Whatever hard work she took on, Barbara would
then go inside and make a roast beef dinner. It did not matter what kind of job it was, she
was there helping her husband. She tried to do all.
Barbara's hobbies were swimming, playing cards, word searches, board games and puzzles.
She loved curling and was a member of St-Lambert Curling Club with Ernie, other
Firefighters and their wives. She was part of the original social network ''CB Radio''
where she spent many nights talking to and making many new friends.
Barbara and Ernie also had fun decorating their truck and trailer which they used in the
St-Patrick's Day Parade.
She loved animals and had many pets throughout her life time, including
dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, hamsters, fish and even chickens.
She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, She spent many summers camping on
the ocean in Myrtle Beach with her family and best friends of 47 years Mike, Liz and their
son Stephan. She also loved to spend time with her brother-in-law, Danny, her sister-in-
law, Judy and their kids David, Terry, Darren, Mark and their families. Barbara never
considered them as ''In-Laws''. To her, Danny and Judy were like her own brother and
sister and she loved them very much.
During her last years, Barbara fought a hard battle bravely. She lost the battle but will
be remembered for her determination and persistence of will.
Her family and her friends will miss her always.
WE LOVE YOU MOM. YOU CAN FINALLY REST IN PEACE.
