Lloyd Malcolm Brereton was born to Edward & Edith Brereton on February 23, 1947 and lived on the same property in Greenfield Park for his entire life (though he tore down and replaced the house on the property). After his father died in 1970 (when Lloyd was 23) he cared for his mother in their home until she passed away at the age of 90.
Lloyd graduated from Sir George Williams University (now Concordia) with a B.Sc. in Chemistry (minor in Math) in 1968. He then took his class 1 Diploma in Education for Secondary Subjects in 1969, followed by a Master’s Degree of Educational Administration in 1978, both from McGill University. He stayed current with the changes in our society, taking a Certificate in Education Technology with an emphasis on computers from McGill in 1986.
Lloyd taught Math, Science, and English in several elementary and secondary schools from 1969-1993, after which he worked in human resources for the school board until 2000. For many years, Lloyd was involved in the teachers unions of the English school board (eventually serving as PAPT Secretary-Treasurer and as a Head Teacher in the South Shore Board), and then transitioned in 2000 to becoming a full-time negotiator for the school board until his 2004 semi-retirement. He then continued in the role part-time until 2011.
Lloyd was a municipal councillor in Greenfield Park from 1978-82 and 1994-2001, and following that he was a member of the urban planning committee from 1994-2021.
Lloyd strongly believed that Jesus Christ was the Son of God who came to save the world from self-destruction by offering salvation to each person individually. As such, he believed that getting the Bible into the hands of people to be able to read for themselves was of vital importance, and he was devoted to working with The Gideons International (now rebranded as ShareWord Global), which brings together Christian business people to distribute the Bible around the world free of cost to the recipients.
In the 1960s, Lloyd’s family became part of a prayer meeting that later resulted in the founding of South Shore Community Church (originally Greenfield Park Pentecostal Church).
Lloyd was involved in many ways in the church over the years, singing in the choir, helping with the maintenance of the building, and serving in the men’s ministry. He was a deep thinker who liked to engage in theological dialogue with the pastor of the day.
Lloyd loved to be of practical help, sponsoring a child overseas, regularly donating to his church’s food bank, helping others with their taxes, and regularly visiting people who were in need, including his dear friend Beverly Spanier.
After his diagnosis with oral cancer in December 2020, Lloyd was unfailingly strong in his faith, and said, “I’ll leave this in God’s hands as I have done with everything else.”
Lloyd will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by his many friends from his work in Christian ministry, education and government, and by his church family, South Shore Community Church.
