Raymond Thom

16 July, 1935 – 27 September, 2021
IN THE CARE OF

Résidences funéraires Collins Clarke MacGillivray White

We sadly announce the passing of Raymond Herbert Patrick Thom, born 16 July 1935 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, deceased 27 September 2021 in Montreal, Quebec. Pre-deceased by the love of his life, his wife Carol Anne Thom (née Rossington), whom he married 16 May 1959. They are survived by their three children, Graham (Shirley), Brian (Julie with children Dylan, Logan and Reagan) and Allison (Frédérick with children Malène and Böelle). Ray is also survived by his sister-in-law Adele of Richmond, BC, and nieces and nephew, Heather, Richard and Janice.

Ray graduated from the University of Manitoba in Electrical Engineering in 1957. He worked in engineering and project management in the power and aluminium industries for over 50 years, on projects around the world, and was made a Fellow of the Canadian Society of Senior Engineers in 2007. The friendships he made during his career continued into his retirement. New ones were made during his time at the Lawn Bowling Club of St. Lambert where he was on the executive.

An avid sailor, skier, diver, cyclist and general outdoorsman, he built the family cottage on Lake Bowker in the Eastern Townships without any power tools. Electricity and water came later….

He and Carol loved to travel, with Ray coming up with an itinerary for both which traced routes through many countries. They also loved the arts and were patrons of performance companies in Montreal and from abroad, ranging from classical music to ballet to contemporary dance. His particular love was jazz, all types, and he attended the Montreal Jazz Festival for many years.

An astute, well read and critical thinker, he challenged those around him to question their views, and brought far-reaching insights to almost any discussion.

As Grandpa to Dylan, Logan, Reagan, Boëlle and Malène he traipsed to the local parks for football and dome climbing, museums, and eateries during their visits, always tolerant, always watchful and attentive. During the pandemic, son Graham spent many an hour with him to keep him company when visits from others near and far were not possible.

Carol and Ray supported numerous charities; for those so wishing we suggest supporting the charity of your choice in Ray's memory.

Beloved father and grandfather, friend; you are missed. We shall hold our precious memories tightly. Mom and Dad, Grandma and Grandpa, we love you and will always cherish our time together.
