Dearest Grandma,

When I think of just how much you loved each of us, I'm reminded of all the beautiful memories that I'll always have when I would visit your home as a child.

I don't know why, but at home I never enjoyed eating food no matter what was being served. But that all changed when I would come over to visit you. You always had the "Food of the Gods" and I enjoyed every last bit of the meals that I would eat at your place. I can remember all those big breakfast we would have complete with eggs, sausage, biscuits, gravy and most times there was some tasty cake or treat for desert after. Corned beef and cabbage was another favorite that you made often along with mashed potatoes. Also your apple pies and pumpkin pies were always the best on the planet. If it hadn't of been for your wonderful cooking, and all the love you delivered it with, I may not be here today!

One of the sweetest memories however, would be listening to you play the organ there at the house as us kids would all gathered around to listen. Sometimes you would sing a little, but not often, mostly you just played. But every time you did, you always put such passion into every note and it was easy to just drift away into another world and let the music take me there. One of the songs that still plays over and over again in my heart is the song Memory. And each time I hear it, I'll play it in your honor Grandma, remembering all the wonderful love, and beautiful memories that you shared with each of us.

Grandma,

I was so very fortunate to grow up just a short drive away from you and Grandpa.  You touched my life in many ways, some large, some small, but all cherished.

I remember all the sweets we ate while you babysat Rachel, Jacob, and I.  Your chocolate cakes will live on in infamy - there was always one when I came home from college, holiday or no.  I'll miss our game at Thanksgiving to see who could eat the most crescent rolls.  Food was always good at family gatherings, "just like downtown," according to you.

Most of all, I remember that you took an interest in each one of us.  It didn't matter whether life was up, down, or sideways, you were there for all of us.  You made us feel special, and like we belonged; not just to you but to the family.  We'll all have that. Always.

Dear Carmen,

Thank you for welcoming me to the family with such warmth and kindness.  I'll always be grateful for the amazing grandson you provided me for a husband and the unconditional love and encouragement you always gave.  I'll also never forget your love of chocolate cake :).

My lovely aunt, Tot (Toto) for me, was one of the gentlest, lightest spirits. Those qualities gave balance in the foundation years of my life.  Being with her gave respit and quality company, and it was a breath of fresh air to have her just down the street.  She was an immediate presence and was open to a chat, advice, sharing great pie, or without a blink, tackling an almost impossible sewing repair job.  .......and she took the pants in....and she took the pants out.....very discreetly.

Her humor bowl was always full and readly to pour out to others.  There she was , tucked away on Alleghany St., this fanciful, creative, genteel soul who could play on the very highest levels......WITH ABANDON........and on par with the most gifted entertainers.  She was awesome in that regard and often, we stood spellbound.    

She was easy to know and love.  I miss her.  Tot, wherever you are, bless you.   with love and gratitude.  Mary Ann Helfrich

Grandma,

I treasure you; you have been a tremendous part of the Wheaton heritage.  I can recall countless times of you bragging about how the Wheaton's can do this or could do that and us Wheaton's are like this or like that.  You helped instill in me a personal pride and loyalty to my wonderful heritage (aka family) which is priceless and visible in all our family.  

Your wonderful whit and quick mind was a prize to me.  I would find myself cradled in the comforting presence of someone engaged and alive.  You encouraged an appreciation in me for life, traveling, culture and taking care of ones self through exorcize and sunshine.  You took the time to be apart of my life; and to engage me with care and conversation; thank you grandma.

I remember our talks before you stepped away from the playing field of our lives; the joy which we would share about hard times, life, and making the most out of our great opportunities; you where a believer in me.  You never missed a chance to encourage me in making the most of life and my dreams; for that I can't thank you enough.

Your birthday and other holiday cards always communicated you where thinking of me; and the treasure of money You and Grandpa would give was continually a blessing and encouragement to me as well.  

Some days I think about how proud you would be if you could see how much I get to change in this world as a child of God and as a Wheaton.  I hope some day it will bring tears of joy to your face as we get to chat about all you accomplished through the wonderful family You and Grandpa brought into this world.  I know I will see you again.

Know this as success comes my way I'll hear your words in my head "this ones for you kid!" or when something was just right "Just Like Downtown".  When the hard times come through I'll hear "Wheaton's can do whatever it takes".  When fear confronts me I'll remember "Us Wheaton's have nothing to fear, were tough and they can't keep us down". Never the less you've left me more than memories and sayings Grandma; you've shown me a life worth living and challenges worth facing without regrets or fear.

Your life matter; and I hope when I lay my head down for the last time that I can pass on the wonderful gift so graciously given to me; A Life Worth Living.

I love you Grandma and I'm looking forward to seeing you again where there is no more pain and no more sorrow.  In the mean time; show those heavenly ones a good round of "Wheaton" so they can prepare for what's comen' up the pipe behind you :) they're going to need a little more prep time I'm sure.

Thank you, Dad, for being an example of hard work and principled living such as the summers we worked at the farm.  I still remember that very hot day we picked and ate fresh blackberries near the spring!
 
Thank you, Mom, for making our house a home. I remember the neighborhood kids playing Monopoly with us on the kitchen table for hours.  You'd let us play until 10pm on school nights.
 
Thank you, Dad, for wholeheartedly loving our family even though you had a hard time expressing it until you were older. I still remember when after visiting you and mom we were driving back to Denver.  At your driveway I saw you cry as we left.  
  
Thank you for putting up with me during the difficult teen years.
 
Thank you for being proud of me. You express that often and it means a great deal to me!
 
Thank you, both, for praying for me.

Dearest Grandpa,
                     Nothing I can do or say will ever convey how sorry I am that Grandma is gone.  This is just one of those times when it seems words truly fail our emotional responses.  One of the few things that gives me comfort is all the terrific memories I have of her and you growing up.  Daniel, Jacob and I were so very lucky to be able to spend so much time with you as we were growing up.  I cannot tell you how important that was in determining who we would be adults.  One of my favorite memories of you and Grandma is the year the Easter bunny forgot to bring Daniel and I baskets.  I still remember calling Grandma and telling her how sad I was because the Easter Bunny had missed us.  Not too long after that you and Grandma arrived at the door with a huge basket for each of us!!  We were so suprised and happy.  You both have made us all so happy over the years.  Thank you for all the time, love and comfort.  Neither of you will ever be forgotten.

Dear Carmen,
You were my mother-in-law, shopping buddy, teacher and friend. Without your encouragement I would not have tried quilting, continued my sewing, or ever learned to cut hair. I would not have knit a hat for Kaylee or a scarf for myself. Thank you for showing me that a grandma can play on the floor, wear a birthday bow on her forehead and just be silly. Thank you for sharing that most precious gift with me, your son Jim. You have left me with so many wonderful memories and so many gifts. I am forever grateful.

Dear Wheaton's,

I was so sorry to hear of Mrs. Wheaton's passing. I am equally sorry that I will not be able to attend in the timeframe listed.  My thoughts are with all of you, and I will especially miss seeing Jerry, Lynnette and Diane.
