Born on March 30, 1937, Ileane was the devoted daughter of Betty and Sam Kanter, and wonderful sister to Brenda and her late husband Jerry Hirsch. Ileane was the beloved wife and best friend for 57 years to late husband Irvin Fagin, whom she adored, and was the loving sister-in-law to the late Mimi and Richard Fagin. She is survived by her sister Brenda, daughter Julie Fagin (Michael) Steinberg, son Michael (Karen) Fagin, grandchildren Josh (Shani) Steinberg, Carly (Peyman Heyrani) Steinberg, Kelly Fagin and Zachary Fagin, the entire Steinberg family, as well as much loved cousins, nieces and nephews.
From early childhood to her last conversations, she embodied an independent, strong, persistent, caring and positive spirit. A teacher by profession, she was deeply dedicated to her family and a life of service to others.
Of the many charitable endeavors she was involved in and honors received, her work as a grief counselor at St. John’s Hospital, as a breast cancer research activist with the National Breast Cancer Coalition and as a dedicated leader with the Jewish Federation’s Women’s Division and United Hebrew Congregation were particularly meaningful to her and impactful to others. She was honored with the St. Louis Woman of Achievement Award in 2004.
Ileane will be deeply missed by those who benefited from the causes she supported and by her family and friends who were the beneficiaries of her wisdom, constant encouragement and unconditional love. May her memory forever be a blessing.
Graveside Service Friday April 24, 10 AM at Beth Hamedrosh Hagodol Cemetery, 9125 Ladue Rd. 63124. Memorial contributions preferred to United Hebrew Congregation of a charity of your choice.
