Joseph Pelts, a beloved husband, father, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 12, 2024, at the age of 95. Born on March 12, 1929, in Gomel, Belarus, Joseph immigrated to the United States in 1989 as a Jewish refugee, seeking a better life for his family.
Joseph is survived by his devoted wife, Frida (née Fradkin); his loving sons, Mikhail (Svetlana) and Jacob (Yelena); his cherished grandchildren, Constantin, Leleya Singer (Matthew), Violetta, and Valerie; and his bright and cheery great-grandchildren, Jack and Alexander.
A Holocaust survivor, Joseph was known for his jolly and uplifting nature. He faced life's difficulties with gratitude and resilience. He was deeply devoted to his family, never known to complain, and always in good spirits and a sense of humor, with the belief that everything would be alright. His love for his wife, Frida, and his family was boundless; he would do anything for them, and he was known for his diplomacy, never having had a disagreement or conflict with those around him.
His joy was evident in everything he did in life. Joseph was a Geodetic (Surveying) Engineer and Civil Contractor, where he served as the lead in his team, always the first to commit to new projects, without fear. Even in retirement, his passion for construction never fell short, and he enjoyed watching construction projects and sharing his knowledge.
Joseph had a zest for life which he shared when dancing, telling jokes, and teaching others - particularly how to drive. His ability to fix things and his fascination with construction remained with him throughout his life.
He was involved with the Jewish Federation, contributing to his community and supporting his grandchildren’s activities at the JCC.
A funeral service and burial for Joseph will be held on Friday, June 14th, 11:00 a.m., at Chesed Shel Emeth-Beth Shalom Cemetery, 650 White Road.
Memorial contributions in Joseph's honor are preferred to the St. Louis Kaplan Feldman Holocaust Museum.
Joseph's joyful spirit, generosity, and dedication to his family and community will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
