Leslie Cohen, a man of boundless curiosity, talent, and courage, passed away peacefully on April 29th, leaving behind a legacy as rich and varied as the seas he loved to sail. A proud Jewish man, Leslie lived a life guided by resilience, creativity, and a deep sense of adventure.
Les was a true Renaissance soul. A gifted musician and singer, he found joy in bringing people together through song. At 12 years of age, he was the youngest member of the St. Louis Philharmonic performing classical violin. He spent his summers training under the direction of the most prominent global violin instructor in New York. He could pick up nearly any musical instrument and play it proficiently
His adventurous heart drew him to the open water, where he became both a skilled sailor and a dedicated sailing instructor, sharing his knowledge and passion with others. As the skipper of his 35 foot sailboat, he led his crew on not one, but three US sanctioned regattas from St. Petersburg, FL to Marina Hemmingway in Havana, Cuba. Whether navigating challenging currents or teaching newcomers the ropes, Les felt most at home with the wind at his back and the horizon ahead.
Leslie was also a proud United States Army veteran, having served his country with honor and bravery. His service was a testament to his strength of character and commitment to something greater than himself.
He was a sports-car enthusiast up to the very end with his absolute favorite black 2024 5.0 Liter Mustang GT. Up to the day before his 94th birthday, he loved his job working at Straub's in Clayton baking cookies, cakes and more.
Beyond his artistic and adventurous pursuits, Les was a man of remarkable skill and practicality. As an electrician and mechanic, he possessed an innate ability to understand how things worked, fixing and building with steady hands and a sharp mind. He approached every task with diligence and ingenuity.
To those who knew him, Les was more than his many talents—he was a source of wisdom, humor, and kindness. Leslie Cohen’s life was one of movement, music, service, and craftsmanship. He leaves behind a lasting impression on all who had the privilege to know him. May his memory be a blessing.
