Alfred Joseph Bergeron, Jr. passed away at Bay Pines VA Hospital on Saturday, March 30. Son of the late Alfred and Bernice (Kuell), he was born in Medford and raised in Danvers, along with siblings Robert, David, Rosemary, and Kathryn, all of whom predeceased him.
Al served four years with the United States Marine Corps based at Camp Lejeune and serving at Guantanamo Bay during the Cuban Missile Crisis. After his service, Al began his nearly twenty-year career with Marshalls Department Stores. He was the Vice President of Operations for the company when a neurological condition forced his early retirement; he stayed an inactive Marshalls employee for the rest of his life.
A dedicated member of the community, he volunteered with organizations such as the Marine Corps League, Hamilton-Wenham Baseball, and St. Petersburg Police. His joys included spoiling his Maltese dogs, a good steak and a coffee frappe, taking the boat to the Backside of Crane’s, fishing, trips to Maine, living by the ocean, and watching his son develop as an athlete.
Al had many good friends and “second family” including Dick and Lisa Landry and Lee and Nancy Aspesi; Lavera Papley and family; his Alan Road, Isla, and Addington neighbors; his Marshalls colleagues and mentor Frank Estey; Bay Pines comrades, Christina, Jimmy, Marty, Jerry, Bill, and so many others. He also appreciated the lifelong support of Beth Israel neurologist Dr. Michael Ronthal whom the family always regarded as the man who saved Al’s life.
Al leaves behind daughter Cheryl Forbes (Chuck), son Glen Bergeron, his adored grandchildren Will and Carter, as well as nephews, nieces, and cousins.
On Monday, April 29, a burial service with military honors at Sarasota National Cemetery will be held at 12:30, followed by a Celebration of Al’s Life at Addington at College Harbor, St. Petersburg, at 2:30 pm. Family and friends are welcome. Address to Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State RD 72, Sarasota, FL 34241.
