When she was still a young child, her family moved to the Newton/Burkeville area in the Piney Woods of East Texas. She had three brothers, Howard, LC and Lawrence and one sister, Fron Ella and together they had a tight family bond.
Kathy was a Texan in just about every way. She loved cooking up Chicken Fried Steak and mash potatoes for her family, and immersed herself into watching Dallas and the JR Ewing saga – many times over! Rarely did she miss watching her beloved Astros and Rockets, and got great pride and joy commentating about “the ball game” with her best friend and sister, Fron Ella. A Texan through and through!
As a single mom, Kathy worked hard to make sure her three kids, Michell, Rene’ and D’Wayne, would never be without. She worked mostly split shifts as an AT&T Operator, to make sure that the kids would not come home from school to an empty house, and would often work double shifts just so her kids had a little weekend spending money. As with many single mom families, making ends meet, could sometimes was hard. But Kathy, or… as her kids called her, “Mommy”, never complained because her kids were the most important thing in her world. And while she loved being a mom, being Maw to her grandkids and great-grandkids is what brought her the most joy!
Kathy will be missed by so many friends and family. But we find peace in knowing that she is now resting in the arms of God reunited with those that have gone before - - especially her grandson, Matthew, and her daughters, Michell and Susan Christine.
Kathy is survived by her daughter and son-in-Law, Rene’ and Abraham Gaytan. Her son and daughter-in-law, D’Wayne and Donna Merritt; brothers, Howard and LC Chapman, her sister, Fron Ella Miller. Granddaughters, Amanda Dominguez, Amber Chapman, Madison Dumas and Shelby Gaytan. Grandsons, Dalton, Devon and Dustin Merritt and great-grandchildren, Marissa, Ava, Elijah and Pricilla.
A visitation will be held on Monday, October 3 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the chapel at Earthman Southwest Funeral Home, 12555 South Kirkwood Road in Stafford, immediately followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m.
The interment will follow, via funeral procession to Forest Park Southwest Cemetery in Richmond.
