He was born in Meadville, Pa., on March 26, 1940, to Daniel “LLoy” Raymond Mattocks, Sr. and Helen Dorothy Waid.
Charles married Mary Ann Braswell (Mattocks) on April 1, 1961, in Seaside, CA. They have been married for 63 years; together they have three children: Charles Leroy Mattocks, Jr. (Doray Rauenzhan), Michael Andrew Mattocks (Janette Freitas), George Wesley Mattocks (Lynda Ukkola), and many grandchildren: Douglas Charles, Charles Leroy, III, Amy Dawn, Michael Corwin, Laura Elizabeth, Matthew Andrew, Caley Austin, Madison Marie, Brody Alexander, Kelli Obrien, Michael Lyman and Kristi Flores.
As a teenager Charles and his brothers rolled actual civil war cannon balls on the diamond in Meadville, until cannon balls were secured, and they could no longer roll them.
At the age of 17 he enlisted in the army. Basic training was at Fort Campbell, KY. He was then transferred to France where he was responsible for several warehouses and the french staff to support them. He served in the US Army for 20 years, which included tours of duty in Vietnam. He was awarded the Joint Service commendation medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, retiring as a Sergeant First Class. Following his military service, he worked for K-Mart and then entered government service working for both the Central Intelligence Agency and the US State Department where he served for 30 years.
He loved to travel with his beloved wife Mary and was willing to go to the ends of the earth with her. Of the exotic places they visited; Egypt, where they rode camels, China, where they walked the great wall, Japan, where they did not eat the eels! The less exotic trips took them to England, France, Italy, Germany, Hungary and Alaska.
He was a member of the Fredericksburg Church of Christ and the Sons of the American Revolution, Colonel Fielding Lewis chapter, Fredericksburg, VA.
He will be remembered for his kindness and helpfulness to his neighbors and church family members; never raising his voice in anger. He loved to play various card games and scrabble.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Daniel Raymond Mattocks, Jr.; his brother-in-law, Ted Johnston (husband of Margaret); and his sister-in-law, Alice Mattocks (wife of Arthur).
