Dorthular (Dorothy) Collins Chapman was born on August 6, 1940 in Pickens South Carolina. She was the only child born to Viola Collins Wright and Hobe Wright. Mama lived in Pickens South Carolina during her early childhood. During her teenage years she moved to Knoxville Tennessee. While visiting her aunt in Greensville South Carolina she met Paul Chapman. They married and from their union was born five children, Connie Chapman Ross, Dorothy Chapman-Nelson, Paul (Danny) Chapman, Timothy Chapman, and Lisa Chapman. Mama was a Christian woman that loved Jesus, her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and everyone she met. She has shown her love to all she encountered in her life's journey.
She received her degree in nursing from Knoxville Community College in Knoxville, Tennessee. Then relocated to Maryland and worked as a private duty nurse. After raising her five children she moved to Virginia and answered a new calling becoming a correctional officer. When she retired from the Department of Corrections, she devoted her attention to the things she loved the most (Jesus, her children, grandchildren, making jewelry, and making mosaic pieces).
On Friday, July 3, 2020 surrounded by loved ones, Mama closed her eyes and received her wings. Mama was the rock of the family and the definition of Love. She will truly be missed for her loving caring words and positive outlook on everything.
Mama leaves to cherish her precious memories; Children, Connie Ross, Dorothy Chapman-Nelson, Timothy Chapman, and Lisa Chapman; Grandchildren, Shavonta Green, Bernard Green, Danielle Brown, Christina Brown, Poushawn Brown, Antoine Washington, Barry Hutcherson, and Bryant Blackburn, Great Grandchildren, Devantre, Julian, Nasya, Brianna, Xavier, Asya, Gabrielle, Pharaoh, Jayden, Kendrick, Harmony, and DJ; Son In-Law, Barry Hutcherson and Anthony Blackburn; and a loving care provider Linda Birago.
She is preceded in death by her grandmother, Judy Collins; mother, Viola Collins Wright; father,Hobe Wright; aunt, Dorothy Collins; aunt, Lelia Lewis; uncle, James (JC) Collins; son, Paul (Danny) Chapman; son-in-laws, Wayland Brown and Ronald (Ron) Ross.
A celebration of life will be held on Monday, July 13, 2020 at 11:30 am at Mullins and Thompson Funeral Service, Stafford Chapel, with the family receiving friends an hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Stafford Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Mary Washington Hospice or Dementia Society of America.
