He was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Karie Sams of Stafford, Virginia; their two daughters, Krystal Cotton and her husband Adam Cotton of Spotsylvania, Virginia and Amy Christensen and her husband Josh Christensen of King George, Virginia; as well as four grandchildren, Savannah Grace Cotton, Lucas Allen Cotton, Lily Mae Cotton, and Aaron Douglas Christensen.
He was preceded in death by his father, Floyd Sams; his mother, Carolyn Sams; his brother, Vernon Sams; and his sister, Joyce Ryder.
Doug was highly skilled in many areas and was a helpful resource for family and friends, given his experience as a plumber and concrete foreman, and operating his own business cutting and delivering firewood and mulch. He loved hunting deer, bear, and turkey at his cabin, “Sams View”, with his family and friends in Bath, Virginia - the home of his birthplace. He enjoyed fishing, working on and driving his 1966 Ford F100, working with his tractor, watching football and rooting for the Dallas Cowboys, and capturing life's best moments with a camera.
Doug was extremely loyal to his wife and two daughters, whom he often referred to as his “three angels”. One of his proudest moments in life was becoming a grandfather; he adored all of his grandchildren and the time he shared with them. He was honored to have his grandsons be his namesakes. He will be forever missed.
