Melissa was the proud mother of Justin D. Smarr and the grandmother of Brian D. Smarr and Charlie J. Smarr.
Melissa is also survived by her sister Donnamarie D. Tippit; brother Rex D. Tobey; niece Jessica A. Thamm; nephews Michael D. Franklin, Stephen G. Thamm and James D. Franklin; as well as her aunt, Donna M. Acton, uncle Donald R. Acton, cousin Michael W. Acton and great-nephews Tavian G. Thamm and Ethan Z. Franklin.
She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Charles A. Zintner; mother Helen M. Tobey; father Donald R. Detwiler; stepfather Orn H. Tobey; grandmother Helen H. Pleitner; grandfather Daniel H. Pleitner; and sister Christa J. Tobey.
Melissa retired from Giant Food, Local 400, in 2013. She was an avid animal lover and had two horses, two dogs and two cats who were her pride and joy.
Melissa enjoyed going to church and spending time with her friends and neighbors whom she considered her extended family. She and Charlie spent a lot of time riding their Harley, attending NASCAR races and concerts, boating, going to the beach and traveling. They especially enjoyed bike week in Myrtle Beach every year and spending every chance she had with her grandsons.
She was born in Washington, D.C., and graduated from Woodbridge Senior High School.
Melissa tragically lost her life in a boating accident along with the love of her life, Charlie Zintner, while they were out spending time together on their boat.
She had an infectious smile and only saw the good in everyone. She was a devoted mother, daughter, sister, aunt, niece and grandmother.
The world will not be the same without her. We have truly lost a very special woman, but must remember she is now among the angels and is resting with her mother, father, stepfather, sister, grandmother and grandfather.
Her family would like to thank everyone for their search efforts and support while Melissa and Charlie parted this earth together to soar with the angels and for their prayers that God give us the strength to endure the loss of our Missy and Charlie.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 13, at Mullins and Thompson Funeral Service, Stafford Chapel.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 14, at St. Francis of Assisi in Triangle, with interment to follow at Stafford Memorial Park.
The family would like to invite her friends to her home for a gathering concluding the burial.
