Alice Ruth Alter 84, passed away on Thursday, June 2, 2016 at home after a long and courageous battle against idiopathic myelofibrosis. She fought the disease with the same strength and toughness that she embodied in her children everyday with her favorite quote; “Come home victorious, or come home on your shield”. In the end the cancer won, but not before Alice got in some good shots against the scourge that it is. Born June 16th, 1931 in Brooklyn, she was the daughter of the late Samuel (Lemuel) and Dorothea (The Duchess) Friedman, and sister to her recently departed brother, the Honorable Robert J. Friedman. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Morton, who never met a bargain he didn’t like, much to Alice's chagrin. Professionally, Alice received many accolades throughout her long career as a Master Teacher and teacher mentor with The New York City School System. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Brooklyn College, and later received her Masters in Special Education from Wagner College. In her later years she continued to mentor local teachers and students in the Stamford School System. Alice had many interests and hobbies but nothing stood out more than her love of mystery novels, history and the Civil War. She was an avid painter and was always eager, and without compunction, to share her political views. She is survived by her four children, Jason and his wife Lisa of Carlsbad, California; Adam and his wife Nancy of Memphis, Tennessee; David and his wife Linda of Grand Rapids, Michigan; and last, but never least, Susan and her husband Andrew (Salty) of Taghkanic, New York; eight grandchildren: Ross, Lindsay, Rosemary, Basil, Gabrielle, Benjamin, Kali, Erin, numerous grand pets and Lance.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations are made to FISH Volunteer Transportation for the Elderly, P.O. Box 871 Stamford, CT 06904 .
