90 years ago, on February 22, 1928, Lillie Margaret (Margo) Green entered the world in Orangeburg, South Carolina. She was the only child born to the late Ethel Green Lewis and Earl Antley. She and her 2 first cousins, Christalee (Chris Summers) and Frank were raised as sisters and brother by their grandfather, David Mack Green. Growing up in the country, in her early years Margo became known as the fastest cotton picker in her town, often picking as much as 200 - 300 pounds in a day!
As a young adult, Margo left the cotton fields of SC to join her mother in Stamford, CT, where she worked as a domestic for many years and where she resided until her death.
She was united in marriage to Arthur “Sonny” Haynes in 1948. From that union 3 children were born, David, Margie and Lesa. They divorced in 1975, but in later years, after the deaths of David and Lesa, they became great friends and would often have Sunday dinner with Margie and her husband, Ron.
Margo’s most important role in her life and her pride and joy was raising and supporting her children and serving the Lord. She loved her children and she loved the Lord. Margo was a member of Bethel AME Church for over 60 years and most joyfully sung in the Senior Choir and then the Gospel Chorus for most of those years. In 2003 she was honored with an “Unsung Hero” award for her faithfulness, dedication and longevity as a member of the church. She remained an active member of the Church until her death and made sure that even while she was ill and couldn’t attend service that her church dues were paid.
Margo enjoyed cooking, gardening, and feeding the birds. And she loved plants and flowers!
She was known in the neighborhood as the lady who stood in the doorway or looked out the window and waved to the children going to school, and neighbors passing by. The empty doorway, the absence of her smile and her kindness will sadden us all.
She fought a good fight, the battle is won!
She leaves to mourn her one and only loving daughter, Margie and son-in-law Ron Lanier; her former husband Sonny Haynes; granddaughter, Victoria Acevedo (Miguel Morales), great-granddaughter Melissa Mansilla, great-great granddaughter Ariana; goddaughter, Barbara Jones; and her best friend, Esther Whitehead all of Stamford, CT; special cousins Frank Green of Brooklyn, NY; Judy Owens of Stratford, CT; Margaret (Willie) Hall of Georgia; a host of cousins and Green, Haynes and Lanier family members, friends and neighbors.
May she rest in eternal peace in the loving arms of her Lord and Savior
