Samantha Calzone

27 August, 199616 September, 2019

On September 16, 2019, Samantha Marie Pritchard Calzone passed away doing what she loved most in this life: riding horses. Samantha was born in Redding, Connecticut, where her passion for horses bloomed throughout elementary and middle school. She began riding at age 9 and quickly rose as a top competitor, winning blue ribbons in show jumping all along the East Coast. Samantha then moved to East Islip, New York where she graduated from East Islip High School with honors.

In 2014, Samantha was accepted into the Animal Science program at University of Connecticut and, of course, joined their equestrian team. She was elected and served as Captain for two years and was adored as a kind, talented mentor for her teammates. Samantha also volunteered two of her spring breaks in Mississippi and Florida, where she helped with hurricane relief projects. Samantha graduated magna cum laude from UConn in June 2018.

Ever chasing her passion, Samantha then enrolled at Hartpury University in England to complete her Masters Degree in Equine Science with a focus on rehabilitation. She had just returned stateside in July of 2019 and was happy to be reunited with her family and boyfriend Michael. Samantha was quickly hired by Takoda Farm and it was there, pursuing her passion, that a horse reared and fell on top of her. She did not suffer.

Samantha is deeply loved and greatly missed by her mother Ruthann Pritchard, father Peter Calzone, older sister Brittany Calzone, grandparents Jean and Rocco Calzone, family members James Holodak, Jr. and Kathy Palmer, boyfriend Michael Iranpour, countless aunts, uncles, cousins, and wonderful friends.

Services will be held from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, September 21 and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, September 22 at the Leo P. Gallagher Funeral Home on 2900 Summer Street in Stamford, CT. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the EQUUS Foundation. Please indicate that the donation is being made in Samantha Calzone’s memory as a memorial award is being created in her honor.

The sadness that we felt upon hearing of Samantha's passing has conjured warm memories of her as a child: whether on a play date or at a soccer game. Samantha was always an exceptionally kind and happy child. So very sorry for your loss, Patrick, Mary Ellen, Emma and Margaret O'Leary

I did not know Sam personally, but do know and love the barn and staff at Takoda Farm. I am saddened and moved by your tragic loss, and know that Sam will be missed by many. I pray that those that did know Sam find some relief in knowing that the entire horse community is mourning with them.

Peter, Ruthann, and Brittany,
There are no words to express how incredibly sorry I was to hear about Sam's passing. It does not seem possible. Even though we are separated by many miles, please know I am with you in spirit; praying that God's grace and love will guide you through your heartache.

Even though I was not very close with Sam, she still had an impact on me - we had a lot of the same friends and interests. I remember one of my fondest memories of her was doing laundry in the North Quad laundry room at UCONN. She was watching and critiquing horse videos. She was making us all laugh hysterically - who knew laundry could be so fun? Throughout the years, Sam was always very pleasant to me and would strike up conversation (99% of the time about horses). She was truly the epitome of a passionate horsewoman, exceptional human being and the life of a party. May she rest in peace, riding horses for eternity. My condolences to her family, friends and loved ones.

Sam was not only a rider but truly loved the animals she worked with. I was fortunate to know her as she was just beginning her riding career. She loved just being around the ponies and horses and was always willing to lend a hand bathing and grazing. Those early days at Stony Meadows are memories that I will cherish forever. My deepest sympathy to her family and friends. Rest in Peace Sam . You will be missed.

Sam was such a bright light, she touched so many lives and we are so thankful she was part of our world as well. The hours upon hours I spent watching the girls ride, care for and love on the horses are memories I miss and cherish every day. The Stony Meadows days would never have been the same without Sam and her huge smile and positivity. I am so very sorry for your loss.
