WALLACE B. HIRSCHBERG, DDS passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by family, at the age of 100 on January 22, 2022. Anyone who knew Wally wouldn’t be surprised to know that he left behind instructions for preparing his obituary.
Wally was born in Brooklyn on October 23, 1921 and attended school in New York City until moving to Norwalk, CT where he graduated from Norwalk High School. After completing his undergraduate studies at West Virginia University, he entered Temple University Dental School, graduated in 1943 and immediately joined the US Army’s Dental Corps as a First Lieutenant serving his country in Okinawa, the Philippines and Korea. In 1946 he was discharged and completed post graduate training at Columbia University, New York University and Mount Sinai Hospital.
In 1947, he returned to Stamford and started his oral surgery practice which continued until his retirement nearly 55 years later. His professional affiliations were numerous on both the local and state levels. He served as Director of the Oral Surgery Staff at Stamford Hospital, President of the Stamford Dental Society, President of the Connecticut Society of Oral Surgeons and was active in the Connecticut State Dental Association, American Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Society for the Advancement of General Anesthesia in Dentistry.
In his spare time, Wally was an avid golfer, often “shooting his age” and spent over 30 years volunteering for Corporate Angel Network (CAN) securing transport for critically ill patients to healthcare facilities throughout the country.
Most of all, Wally treasured his family. He is survived by his wife of 75 years, Muriel (Cookie), sons Steven (Marke) of Stamford, and Paul of San Diego, CA, and daughter Bonnie of New Orleans, LA. Wally is also survived by grandchildren Rachel (Thomas), Dave and great grandchildren Jules and Anouk.
Wally was terrific plain and simple. He will be terribly missed, but lovingly remembered.
Due to inclement weather and COVID protocols, a celebration of Wally’s life will be held at a future date in the spring.
