long illness. She was for decades a warm and welcoming figure as the
former owner and heart of The Card Shop stationery and toy store at
the core of Staten Island’s West Brighton community.
Born Elaine Marsha Lifschitz to parents Nathan and Libby on July 18,
1942, she was raised on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, graduating from
Seward Park High School. She married Staten Island native Rocco
Eugenio, serving for some time as a bank teller while raising and
working tirelessly to meet the needs of daughter Rhonda and son
Matthew, all three of whose passages preceded Elaine’s.
Elaine is survived by her loving and constant partner of over the past
20 years, Howard Fisk. She also leaves behind older sister Irene
Goldstoff of Morristown, NJ and her children Adam Eisgrau, Jill
Eisgrau, and Beth Eisgrau Heller, as well as grand nephew Sam Heller
and step grand niece Greta Kleckner. She’s survived by younger sister
Helen Penzel of Port St. Lucie, Florida as well, and her daughters
Adrian Penzel-Mercado and Brooke Visdomini.
Beloved for her fierce love for her children, fathomless generosity,
and selflessness Elaine will be deeply missed by family and former
patrons alike for her affectionate directness, arch sense of humor,
and legendary stuffed shells.
Those wishing to pay their respects to Elaine are invited to join
Howie and the family for a brief remembrance service at 11:30 am on
Sunday, January 11 at Harmon Funeral Home, 571 Forest Avenue on Staten
island. A full celebration of Elaine’s life of love and service is
planned for later this year. For more information about that event,
and to leave a remembrance message of your own, please see her
memorial page: https://www.mykeeper.com/ElaineEugenio.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Elaine’s memory to
United Cerebral Palsy, the American Heart Association, a charity of
your choice, or planting a tree in Elaine's honor.
Her family also wishes to thank the medical staff of Manhattan’s New
York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center for the quality and
warmth of their care for Elaine.
