Lifelong resident of Westerleigh, Elizabeth (Betty) Winsch (80) passed away January 17, 2021 after a brief illness.
Betty was the only daughter of Herbert G. Winsch and Mildred (nee Gresty) Winsch; and after her mother’s early passing, stepdaughter of Margaret (Peggy Page) Winsch.
Betty grew up on Dickie Avenue and graduated Curtis High School in 1957. She then attended Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY where she graduated with a Degree in Fine Arts and Design. Her Degree led her to many jobs in the Interior Design field. One of her clients was renowned Architect I.M. Pei. Betty retired in 2002 from TIAA-CREF.
In 1990, Betty moved to the newly developed Vogel Loop, just a few blocks from her childhood home. She was an active member of Immanuel Union Church in Westerleigh and held many positions there including being a Deaconess, participating in the Women’s Workshop and the large church fair held annually in November. Betty was also a choir member, something she really enjoyed doing.
Her love of Westerleigh became a passion when she served on the Board of Directors of the Westerleigh Improvement Society, an organization that works to help Westerleigh continue with its fine traditions and old town feel.
Betty enjoyed needlepoint, embroidery and crocheted baby blankets for her newborn great-cousins, Alexandra and Evangeline. She also enjoyed working on the ancestry and genealogy of her family. A lover of Jazz music, her radio would always be tuned to a Jazz station. She also enjoyed going to Broadway shows with her friends.
Surviving members of her family are her cousins, Richard Sohm; Glenn Sohm (Rev. Bette Johnson-Sohm); Evan Sohm (Mary); Godson, Barry Sohm (Christine) and step-cousins, Dorri, Margaret (Penny) and Jimmie. Her homecare workers, Denise and Trista became her source of comfort and companionship during the Covid pandemic.
Visitation will be Sunday, January 24th from 3-7 p.m. at the Casey Funeral Home, Slosson Avenue. A Funeral Service for the immediate family is scheduled for Monday, January 25th 10:30 a.m. at the Funeral Home. Interment to follow at Moravian Cemetery, Staten Island.
In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations to Immanuel Union Church or the Westerleigh Improvement Society would be greatly appreciated.
