

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- George McCaughan Sutton, 85, of Great Kills, a retired city Sanitation worker, National Guard veteran and family man, died Tuesday in Staten Island University Hospital, Prince's Bay.
Mr. Sutton was born and raised in Brooklyn, and graduated from Midwood High School there in 1947.
He served in the New York National Guard in the mid-1950s. He was very proud of his country and supported veterans, family said.
Mr. Sutton settled in Great Kills in 1967.
He worked for Sanitation for 25 years, until retiring in 1976.
Mr. Sutton was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Brooklyn.
He loved the beach and had spent summers at Breezy Point in Queens when he was a boy. He also was fond of going on cruises, visits to Atlantic City and taking road trips with his wife, the former Catherine Vaughan.
He was a loyal New York Mets fan, liked to tinker with electronics and adored his Bichon Frise, "Frosty."
Mr. Sutton was a parishioner of St. Clare's R.C. Church, Great Kills.
Catherine, his wife of 58 years, died in 2010.
He is survived by his sons, George and Thomas; his daughters, Nora Piro, Barbara Vaccaro, Patti Margiotta and Katie Sutton, and eight grandchildren.
The funeral will be Friday from the Casey-McCallum-Rice South Shore Funeral Home, Great Kills, with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Clare's Church. Burial will follow in Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn.
