Mr. Jerome P. Scully (Jerry) was born in Donegal, Ireland in 1932 and lived in Bayonne before moving to Staten Island in 1944. While at Curtis High School he was elected to the Arista Honor Society. He played basketball under Mayor Moe Cohen’s Tompkinsville Blue Jays. The 1949-1950 season gave them 67 wins and only 7 losses, winning many titles but lost in the finals at Madison Square Garden.
Jerry served in the US Coast Guard aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Tamaroa, a search and rescue ship depicted in the film “Perfect Storm.” He continued to play basketball in the service with the Ellis Island team and the 3rd Coast Guard district.
A Cum Laude graduate of Wagner College, Jerry earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration and economics in 1962. He served as president of the evening student association and was named to Who’s Who in American Colleges and universities.
He was Vice President and Corporate Secretary of the National Cargo Bureau, a marine surveying organization based in Manhattan, retiring after 28 years.
He started coaching the newly formed St. Teresa’s Little Pro Basketball League in the early 60’s and later coached the boys’ varsity team and then took over the girls’ varsity team.
Jerry was a long-standing member of the Esquire Golf Club until he retired in 1987. He established the Staten Island Seniors GolfLeague for the 50+ golfers which now has over 70 active members, and was chairman of the Staten Island Senior Olympics Golf Committee. He was also a member of the Curtis High School Golf Committee.
He enjoyed singing and sang in the St. Teresa’s Choir for 40 years, as well as a Cantor. He also sang in the Santa Maria Del Mar Church in Palm Coast, Florida. He had been a member of the Blessed Sacrament Choir for the past few years. He was amember of the American Legion and a past member of the Warren Jaques Memorial Committee, the Holy Name Society, the Knights of Columbus
Jerry and Janet Noble were married in 1953. In September they would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. They have four children, Susan, Steven, Joanne, and J.P. and seven grandchildren, Jeanne, Sean, Billy, Emma, Jamie, Jennifer and Patricia. Jerry is survived by two sisters, Anna Neve and Kathleen Composto.
Mr. Scully was a very kind man, a gentle man and a gentleman.
