It is with great sorrow that the family of Joseph James Doherty, Jr., 88, announce his passing on June 3, 2022 after a brief illness. He was born in Brooklyn, NY to Joseph J. and Ruth Doherty (nee Ferguson).
Joe served in the United States Army achieving the rank of Specialist Third Class Technician. He received the National Defense Service Medal for service in the Korean War. After honorably serving for two years, he continued to serve in the Army Reserve of New York for an additional four.
After High School, he married the love of his life, Barbara. They made their home in Staten Island, raising ten children during their sixty year marriage. They were perfect for each other, enjoying many cruises and trips. Their favorites include Alaska, Ireland and Paris. A 2 1/2 month cross country trip was another wonderful highlight. Joseph retired as a Supervising Engineer in the Planning Department from NYNEX Corporation (now Verizon) in 1992. He continued to enjoy many friendships from his more than 30 years there.
He designed and built an upstate vacation home with the help of his sons and sons-in-law. This home became the scene of one of his favorite events: "Guy's Week". For almost thirty years, he was the architect of a fun-filled, anything goes week for his sons and other male relatives. After the kids were grown, he and Barbara split their time between that house and their home in Florida.
Joseph loved gambling, bowling and playing golf. He had a wonderful life filled with love for his family and many friends. He was a great joke teller, and an Irish lilt found it's way into many of them. Joe was an avid NY Yankee fan. In a house split into Met and Yankee fans, he could argue and discuss both teams and baseball with a fair point of view (most of the time). He was admired for his work ethic and the advice others sought from him.
Joe is predeceased by his wife, Barbara Doherty (nee Maxwell); his sister, Jane Sebastian of Waterbury, Connecticut; his sister, Eileen Carbone of St. Petersburg, FL; his brother, Cornelius Doherty of Freehold, New Jersey and a grandson, David James Galgano of New York.
He is survived by ten children: Linda (Timothy) Quin, Michele (Mark Svenningsen) Doherty, Jacqueline (Glenn) Territo, Maureen LaGambina, Joseph (Gail) Doherty III, Barbara (Paul) Petersen, Michael (Laurie) Doherty, John (Maria) Doherty, Gene Doherty and Lee Doherty.
Mr. Doherty is also survived by seventeen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren: his brother, Edward Doherty and his sister-in-law Dolores
Maxwell.
A visitation for Joseph will be held Sunday, June 12, 2022 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Harmon Funeral Home, 571 Forest Ave, S.I. NY.
10310. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at Sacred Heart Church 981 Castleton Ave, Staten Island, NY 10310 on Monday June 13, 2022 at 10:30 AM.
