

Native Staten Islander; her biggest joy was working in her garden
Monica Barry Buono (known to many as Honey), 91, of Staten Island, N.Y., passed away on Aug. 23 2020.
Daughter of the late John and Monica Barry of Stapleton, Monica was one of seven children. She married Matteo Buono on July 5, 1947, and moved to Rosebank.
She was predeceased by her husband, Matteo in 1996, and siblings John, Helen, Edward, Walter Barry, Josephine Salerno, Blanche LaGreca.
She will be sadly missed by her three children: Matthew (Carolyn), Monica Lynda (Frank), John (Denise); grandchildren: Jaclyn (John), Alexandria, Cassandra, Matthew John, Matthew Richard, Johnny and Danielle; great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Nicholas, Isabella and Antonio.
She enjoyed playing cards, Mah-Jong, doing puzzles, knitting, crocheting, word searches and reading books. Over the years Monica bowled on many bowling leagues. Her biggest joy was working in her garden. She loved flowers.
Monica belonged to many clubs over the years including AARP 4294, Shepherds of Bethlehem (Sir Wolfs Lodge 61), and the American Legion. Monica was one of the first crossing guards assigned to PS 13 in Rosebank.Years later she returned to PS 13 as a paraprofessional.
She loved being with her children and grandchildren, especially on Thanksgiving when she would cook for all.
Visitation will be at Casey Funeral Home, S.I., on Thursday, Aug. 27 from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral Mass will be from St. Joseph Church, Tompkins Ave., Rosebank at 10 a.m. Friday.
