Beloved brother, loving husband, devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather
Nabil A. Hakim, also known as Bill, passed away on Dec. 31, 2018. He just celebrated his 91st birthday.
Born on Dec. 21, 1927, Bill was one of four brothers, all whom he loved very much. He was a family man through and through and took great interest in the lives of his children. He had a strong and special bond with his only son, Will, speaking quite often with him every day. He was always available to lend an ear or talk things out with you if you needed advice.
Bill was a beloved brother, loving husband, and devoted father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Nadia (nee Paoli); two daughters, Nora Valijan and Carole Hills, and son, Will; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Bill lived on Staten Island for over 45 years and worked in Manhattan for Great American Insurance Company as a vice president in their maritime underwriting division until he retired at age 62. He then went on to own his own businesses and continued to work until the present.
He took great pride in keeping his mind and body active and attributed this to his longevity. He liked routine, never missed a day of work, and found purpose in each day. As the pillar of the family, he will be missed deeply but will be remembered as a man who was active, full of life, and always looking to the future.
Bill was a longtime member of the esteemed brotherhood of Masons. He enjoyed watching golf, tennis, and soccer, and was an avid chess player. He was very interested in politics and current events. He found pleasure in magic tricks and optical illusionists. His young mind reveled in technology as he was computer savvy and loved to surf the internet to broaden his knowledge. He was also interested in finance and the New York Stock Exchange.
Bill was well traveled and visited many diverse and beautiful countries in his lifetime. He lived in Palestine, Lebanon, and Canada, before moving to Queens, N.Y., and eventually settling on Staten Island in 1973. He enjoyed family trips to Las Vegas, Niagara Falls, Atlantic City, and Myrtle Beach.
His family will be celebrating his life on Thursday, Jan. 3, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Harmon Funeral Home in West Brighton. A Mass will be Friday, Jan. 4, at 10 a.m. at Holy Trinity Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church (1641 Richmond Ave.), with a burial to follow at Moravian Cemetery, S.I.
