Reginald G. Van Dyke, 73, a longtime Staten Islander, passed away peacefully at Richmond University Medical Center on October 15, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones. He was the beloved son of the late Harry G. Van Dyke and Lorraine Yorke.
Reggie attended McKee High School, where he learned a trade in auto mechanics. He was later drafted into the United States Air Force, where he served with honor and was recognized for his service. After completing his military duty, Reggie embarked on a long and successful career as a mechanic. He worked for various companies and ultimately retired from the MTA as a master mechanic.
On Thanksgiving Day in 2000, Reggie met Marvela Guice, and their bond blossomed into a loving marriage in 2006. They shared 19 beautiful years together. Reggie was previously married to Beatrice Van Dyke, and from that union, two daughters were born: Rasheeda and Raina Van Dyke.
Reggie had a deep passion for cars—especially racing—and was known as a gifted mechanic. He also had a lifelong love for basketball. His favorite team was the New York Nets, and his favorite player was Dr. J (Julius Erving). He could often be found playing basketball at Cromwell Center back in the day. In addition, Reggie was an avid jazz enthusiast who appreciated the soul and rhythm of good music. He was known for his kind heart, cool demeanor, and generous spirit—always ready to help anyone in need. He will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of knowing him.
Reggie is survived by his loving wife, Marvela Guice-Van Dyke; daughters, Rasheeda and Raina Van Dyke; grandchildren, Tyrese and Anyah Smith; sister, Jacqueline Van Dyke; brother, Cecil Van Dyke; aunt, Beryl Yorke; and mother-in-law, Janett Murrell. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, and dear friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, Harry Van Dyke and Lorraine Yorke; his sister, Cheryl Strachan; and his brother, Guy Van Dyke.
We will miss his kind heart, loving spirit, and sense of humor. His legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Visitation will be held at Virginia Funeral Chapel, located at 350 Slosson Ave, Staten Island, NY, 10314, on October 25, 2025, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
