Mr. Merenda was one of my favorite fathers at Scared heart School and THE best coach I ever had.  I now coach basketball for my 6th grade son's team and tell my wife that I try to coach and carry myself like he did.  Every time I found out he was to be my coach I get very excited for that season.  I still remember  the sound his leather loafers made in the gym too. Also, he always drove us home from practice in a different Chevy car, great stuff!  Sacred Heart School was a special place in the 1970's because of people like this man.  RIP...

In every school, there are a few parents who go above and beyond and for a period in time, they become part of the very fiber of the school. I can think of a number of those people from my school days, and one of the most special was Richie Merenda. Mr. Merenda was, in my eyes, THE sports dad of my youth. He coached basketball teams, and was often the first coach many kids at Sacred Heart had. He helped run our school's entire sports program, and never missed a CYO Sunday in the gym.  As one of the cheerleaders, I always particularly appreciated the fact that he always went out of the way to make the cheerleaders feel so special and like such an integral part of the sports program.  I always looked forward to seeing him not just at games, but at the cheerleading competitions, and even when I was in high school, he sought me out at the cheerleading competitions with a flower, a hug and a smile.  So many of us from SHS are deeply involved in our own kids' school's sports programs, and I know that part of the reason is because of the culture Mr. Merenda helped establish and the role model and mentor he was to so many of us. Rest in peace, Mr. Merenda, and thank you for being such a big influence in so many lives.  With love, Judy Conti
