Born on Staten Island, he lived in Rosebank until 15 years ago when he moved to Dongan Hills.
Mr. Armstrong was a custodial worker at the Staten Island Savings Bank before retiring in 2011.
He earned his GED about three years ago with the help of the Skylight Center, St. George, of which he was very proud. The Skylight Center is where he also learned computer skills.
Mr. Armstrong's passion was helping others less fortunate, and through the Skylight Center he was able to act as a big brother.
Mr. Armstrong is survived by his sister, Barbara Armstrong-Griswold.
"His nieces and nephews and friends will dearly miss this quiet and meek person," she said.
The funeral will be Thursday from the Virginia Funeral Chapel, Dongan Hills, with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Ann's R.C. Church, Dongan Hills. Burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp.
