We are so sorry to hear about Sam uncles passing, please accept our deepest condolences. 

We enjoyed spending time with him whenever he would come to the uk and would always look forward to his visits. He was always very talkative, funny and charming. It amazed us how incredibly active he stayed and we especially admired his paintings, with a couple of them proudly displayed at home.

I was lucky enough to visit him a couple of times in New York. It was always a highlight to hear him talk about memories of when we were younger and it often proved that his memory would be better than mine. He once reminded me of the time he brought me and Aran an infamous "New York cheesecake" which we duly fought over straight away. Another fond memory I have is when I visited him on a freezing cold December day and he suggested we have a couple of shots of sambuca to warm us up. Sam uncle had a tendency to surprise you and put a smile on your face at the same time and I'll truly miss that about him. 

We will always remember Sam uncle with a massive grin on his face which would immediately dissipate to everyone around him. We are so thankful for the time we shared and the memories we have with him.

We would like to express our sincere condolences on the recent passing of your father. We had the honor to meet Samuel just a handful of times, but every time was a big pleasure talking to him. His presence was always inspiring calm, honesty, warm friendship.

We cannot forget Samuel giving the amazing speech at Samantha and Cornel wedding. After years, I still remember his jokes and wisdom pieces of advice.

It was such a nice evening when Samuel presented us few of his paintings. Admiring his paintings, it showed us again what a warm, humble and kind person he was. Recently, we helped our son hanging few of Sam’s paintings in their house. The paintings warmed up the house.

We spent few Christmas dinners together. Great times. I remember Samuel’s excellent humor and elevated conversation. I always liked to have a table seat closer to him.

Thank you, Samuel, for being such a good hearted person and welcoming our son in your family. He is always talking about you with big passion. Recently he was telling us about the great time he was having  playing chess with you.

Samuel, you will always be in our prayers. You will always be with us, at the head seat of the table, every time we will get together with Gnanasegaram family.

God welcomes you with open arms. Rest in peace, Samuel.

Uncle Sam was a wonderful person. He made sure he connected with all his relations from Batticalloa and Alvai. His mother Parupathi (Violet) is my paternal Grand Father - D.N Chinniah's youngest sister. Ever since I lost my Father Durairajah I became more close to Uncle as he resembled my father. Of course they are first cousins anyway . Whenever he visited us either in Holland or in UK, we had quality time. He even helped me to fill some valuable information in our Nahappar Family Tree . Original information was was from my Father. He also liked playing music to my grand children. I am glad I was fortunate to visit him in Staten Island as recent as 2018. He was very sprightley then and showed all his paintings. Uncle sam we love you. May your Soul RIP with your Wife's.

Sorry to hear about Soma uncle. My deepest sympathies to Kala and Geetha. My memories go back to childhood days when I spent my holidays with Sugritham uncle where I met Soma uncle. Hi witty jokes and trips with him on his circuits are unforgettable. We enjoyed a trip to Sigiria and many other places. I met him last in Canada at Thelma's daughter's wedding. It is with great sadness that I write this tribute. Sithappa was one in a million, humble, loving and caring and so full of fun. His kindness and wit are legendary.

Sithappa has been a huge presence throughout my life and a guiding light.

I have so many great memories, just one of them being during my time living with my beloved Mami and Mama, the late Evelyn Selvamani and Sabaratnam Victor Balasingham during my schooling at Jaffna College.  Sithappa used to drive from Vavuniya to Vadukoddai most weekends  to spend time with us and watch me play cricket, soccer and hockey and encourage and give me his feedback, as Sithappa excelled in cricket and soccer representing Jaffna College.

His star qualities have been written by all who have been fortunate to have known and loved him.

We will treasure the holidays Sithappa and Chinnamma spent with us  in Colombo and Melbourne and his beautiful paintings which he sent us from New York.

Sithappa you are, and will always be an inspiration to me. I thank God for having you and sharing in our lives

Dear Niranjan 
Thank you for your call. We are so sorry to hear  your devastating news. We never met your Dad, but know how wonderful and supportive he was to you over the years and can only start to imagine what you are feeling now.

You will gradually find comfort in all the happy memories. Your dad lived to see you find happiness and security and love. He will have died content for knowing that. AND best of all he did not suffer a long illness.

Make sure you find time to grieve and allow yourself to do so - and don't expect it to pass quickly. Losing a parent takes time to process for us mortals. 
I wish I could be with you to try to help somehow. I'm giving you a big hug now from halfway across the globe.

Dear family of Sammy Anna
We extend our deepest sympathies to all of you.  We know that he has gone to a better place - to his heavenly home. 
Sammy anna lived a full and productive life and was a man with integrity. He was loving, compassionate and kind-hearted, taking opportunity to overextend himself to help others. 
It was a privilege to have had Sammy anna as the patriarch of the Somanader family to be the chief guest at our 50th Wedding anniversary in 2010, and we had a lovely time with him in Calgary. He connected with many people and made quite an impression on our friends, who still frequently ask about him saying that he was a prim and proper, well organised gentleman.
He had a special connection with Trina too and endeared himself to her. She was taken up with her older Uncle’s dress sense commenting that he was always well dressed, looking debonair in his designer clothes. 
We were impressed that he took up painting at a late stage in his life and did it well. He shared those paintings with us and others.
He travelled quite a bit, especially to visit his wife’s relatives and his, in Sri Lanka  (his birthplace) and elsewhere. His sister Mani acca was also close to us. He was the connection between our extended families and gave us news about them. He loved his people.
Sammy anna and his wife, Olive Machal, have been close to us since arriving in the USA and we connected with them. He shared with me how he got closer to the Lord after Olive Machal passed away.
He was blessed with a very loving family with daughters; Geetha, Kala, Daya and son Niranjan and their families who nurtured and cared for him and gave him much pleasure.
Sammy anna had a beautiful life and know he had finished his journey when he said he was ready to go home.
We thank God for his witness and testimony and especially that he knew where he was going. We are celebrating his life, praising, and thanking God for having him in our midst and sharing our lives with him.

I have pleasant memories of Sam Marma when we were living in Vantharamoolai Batticaloa

He and Aunty were frequent visitors to our home with his lovely daughters 

We use to go hunting to Vakarai and to Passekudah during week ends and his wit and humour are treasured 

I was fortunate to visit him inStratton Island  New in 2013  during Christmas with my wife Ai kin and daughter Lakshi , Imakshi and son in law Nishan Prabhakaran

`Sam Somanader and I are cousins. We trace our beginnings from a common ancestor- Daniel Somanader. Daniel Somanader was born towards the final years of the Eighteenth Century. Daniel, was the first person to assume the family name of Somanader. He was one of the five pupils of the saintly Rev. William Ault, pioneer Methodist Missionary to Batticaloa in Eastern Sri Lanka in 1814. As a result of the righteous influence of Ault Daniel became a Christian. Daniel Somanader’s devotion and Service to God from then on, though in life he was a high government official, is recorded in a book written in 1926. Sam and most other Somanaders have continued as  practicing Methodist Christians for well over 200 years.
May the merciful God Almighty, whom Sam knew and worshipped and served well all his long life, accept him into his glorious and blessed presence. 
As a family historian. I can vouchsafe, that Sam holds the record for longest lived Somanader. No other Somanader in the span of over 200 years from first Somanader to the present eight generation of hundreds of the clan, has lived even up to 90 years. Sam was blessed to live up to 98 years and reach end of his life in tranquillity and peace. I am reminded of the verse in bible that records the death of Jacob. ‘He blessed his Children and then drew his legs up onto his bed and fell as asleep.’ 
I remember vividly Sam’s father and mother and Sam as a young and handsome young Irrigation Engineer driving about dual function boat -car. Probably he needed to convert his car to travel over man-made lakes constructed for irrigation purposes. I can write much about them. But I will hold it for another more suitable occasion.
But just one more word- an expression of gratitude. He was in Colombo, Sri Lanka in 2003 when my beloved passed away, he was there to attend her funeral and condole with me. Some days past, he was present at her Memorial Service and made a very moving tribute to her. Thank you, Sam Annan (the latter word means

Somanader Uncle was a dear friend of my father and a close  family friend. I remember living in the same compound in Batticaloa Irrigation Department quarters in the mid-60s. Though my father and Somanader uncle moved to different stations, their friendship continued. Every time the Somanaders passed through Killinochchi they would stop by at our place. We would do the same when we passed through Vavuniya. Pappa and Somanader uncle met again in Canada in 1994 and spent a whole day catching up. We cherish the memories of Somanader uncle’s and Pappa’s friendship.
