STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Longtime Huguenot resident Vincent Nangano, 82, a Marine Corps veteran, former aerospace worker and retired city Transit Authority supervisor who was devoted to his family, died Tuesday at home.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, he graduated from Lafayette High School in his native borough. He moved to Huguenot in 1972.
Mr. Nangano served in the U.S. Marine Corps. A member of the Third Battalion, Second Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force, he attained the rank of sergeant. He later served in the Army Reserve in Company B, 99th Signal Battalion.
He retired in 1990 as a supervisor for the city Transit Authority, assigned to Brooklyn. Prior to that, he worked for 10 years for Grumman Aerospace Corp., and worked on the lunar module and F14, his family said.
Inspired to help children with autism after their son, Daryn, was diagnosed with autism, he and his wife, the former Florence Feola, were instrumental in the development of Eden II and On Your Mark programs, which they help organize in the 1970s.
His son, Daryn, died in 1994.
Surviving Mr. Nangano, along with Florence, his wife of 56 years, is his daughter, Lisa Nangano.
The Casey McCallum Rice South Shore Funeral Home, Great Kills, handled arrangements, including cremation.
