The Bulloch County native was born to the late Herman and Florrie Davis Motes on September 19, 1941. He worked in the plumbing and construction industries until his health declined and had served in the National Guard for many years. Herman loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing and hunting. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and loved reminiscing with his sisters.
In addition to his parents, Herman was preceded in death by his loving wife, Diane Motes, son, Mitchell Motes, sister, Minnie Lee Motes and three brothers-in-law, Moses Bolton, E. W. Miller and Warren Smith; and sister-in-law, Jan Short.
Mr. Motes is survived by his son, Mike Motes and wife, Lynn of Statesboro; daughter, Michelle McNeese and husband, Heath of Athens, Alabama; five grandchildren, Matthew Bush of Atlanta; Katie Mullis, Amelia Mullis, Jay Mullis and Kendall Mullis all of Athens, Alabama; two sisters, Ruth Bolton and Dorothy Miller both of Portal; brother-in-law, Gary Smith and his wife, Clarice and several nieces and nephews.
A gathering of family and friends will be held 5:00 to 7:00 PM Thursday, April 12, 2018 in Hodges-Moore Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Friday, April 13, 2018 in the chapel of Hodges-Moore Funeral Home with Reverend Roy Jarriel and Brother Rick Domerese officiating.
Burial will follow in Poplar Spring Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Matthew Bush, Jay Mullis and Kendall Mullis, and nephews, Earl Miller, Kenny Miller and Matthew Oglesby.
