Mary was born in Ripley, Mississippi to the late Shelby Miles and Frances Mary Dunlap Barnett. She graduated from Ripley High School, where she was the valedictorian and went on to graduate from Mississippi State College for Women, in Columbus, Mississippi. Mary began her teaching career in Corinth, Mississippi and worked as a Home Economist with the Extension Service in several places in Mississippi, before moving to Statesboro in 1972. In Statesboro, she became a teacher for the Bulloch County Board of Education and was a member of Statesboro First United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Dan Williams Sunday School Class. Mary enjoyed traveling with her husband, SEC Football and spending time with her grandchildren and was a member of the Golden K Kiwanis and a resident of the Southern Manor Retirement Inn.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, William Lanier “Bill” Adams, Sr., sisters, Catherine Barnett and Nyleen Barnett Bell and grandson, James Adams Cromley.
Mrs. Adams is survived by her son, William Lanier Adams, Jr and is wife, Elizabeth, of Plano, Texas; daughters, Grace Adams Stewart and her husband, Richard, of Statesboro; Ann Adams Cromley and her husband, Lee of Brooklet and Mary Elizabeth Adams of Statesboro; grandchildren, Jennifer Adams, Frances Adams, Meg Adams, Mary Catherine Cromley, Mollie Cromley, and John Cromley, Jr.
A gathering of family and friends will be held 3:00 to 4:30 PM Sunday, January 20, 2019 in the Fellowship Hall of Statesboro First United Methodist Church, immediately followed by the funeral service in the Sanctuary with Reverend Jimmy Cason officiating.
The burial will follow in Brooklet City Cemetery.
Members of the Dan Williams Sunday School Class will serve as honorary pallbearers.
