

She was born December 9, 1922, in Iredell County and was the daughter of the late Charles Atwell and Rosa Jane Morrow Stewart. The youngest of nine children, Checkie was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles B. Stewart and Jacob A. Stewart; and six sisters, Rixie Gray Stewart, Davie Lee Stewart, Mary S. Pratt, Ruth S. Smith, Frances S. Walton and Edna S. Johnson.
In 1940, she graduated from Celeste Henkel School, and in 1944, she married Coleman R. Miller who preceded her death in 1963. In 1972, she married Espy Waugh who also preceded her in death. She was a former employee of Statesville Sportswear and was a lifelong member of New Bethany Baptist Church where she loved being active until her health declined. Checkie also enjoyed gardening and spending time with her family.
She is survived by one daughter, Dianne Miller Morrison (Junior, deceased); two grandchildren, Laurie Morrison Reavis (Allen) of Columbia, South Carolina, and Michael A. Morrison (Roxanne Newton) of Statesville; and two great-granddaughters, Jordan Reavis and Lauren Reavis.
A graveside service celebrating Checkie’s life will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, April 13, 2014, at New Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Bill Mason officiating. The family will receive friends at the graveside following the ceremony.
