Born in Iredell County, November 9, 1958, he was the son of the late Lincoln and Edna Childers. He attended special education classes in Statesville City Schools, Iredell Developmental Day Center and Lifespan Enrichment.
He enjoyed participating in Special Olympics and attended the state games. He helped deliver Meals on Wheels and participated in many other volunteer opportunities through the Adult Learning Center. While attending the Adult Learning Center, Gwyn portrayed Joseph in the annual Christmas pageant for many years.
Gwyn attended Pleasant Grove, Front Street, and Yadkin Baptist Churches as well as other churches he enjoyed visiting throughout his life. He loved his church and music, especially gospel music. His favorite song was Amazing Grace and he loved blessing others by singing any chance he could.
Gwyn never missed attending the Childers-Gilreath family reunion for 47 straight years.
Those left to cherish his memory are his brother Stanley Childers (Pam), and sisters, Judy Daniels, Celia Maness and Althea Owens (Mike). In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers-in-law, Tommy Daniels and Garrett Maness. He is further survived by a number of special nephews and nieces.
Gwyn has been a blessing to his family and countless friends throughout his life. The family would like to thank Gwyn’s special caregivers, Bradley and Tandra White, Linda Josey and Robin Reinhardt, for their loving care for him. Thanks are also extended to the entire staff at Lifespan, as well as the Gordon Hospice House staff.
