

Mrs. Helen Josephine Huebner Cook, 85, a resident of Cardinal Village on Davie Avenue in Statesville, until mid June when she moved to Harrisburg, PA died Wednesday, July 23rd at the home of a son, James F. Cook. Born in Gnadenhutten, Ohio on June 21, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Lawrence E. Huebner and Nellie M. Betts Huebner. Helen was a retired educator and a member of First Baptist Church where she was also a member of the Lydia Sunday School Class. Helen received her Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education from Lenoir Ryhne College in 1972. She also earned her Master's Degree in Reading from Appalachian State University in 1979. She was a member of the International Reading Association, North Carolina Educators Association, and the National Educators Association. Helen loved history and enjoyed traveling with family and friends to other countries. She was an active member of both a Statesvile reading and bridge club. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Helen enjoyed being with family and was the official "photographer" at every event. Scrapbooks were tediously prepared by her and presented to all family members at special occasions and milestones. Just prior to her death, she created a hard bound book entailing her ancestry history to include past and new generations. These special books were given to each of her sons.
On April 26, 1953, she married Billy J. Cook who preceded her in death. Survivors include 3 sons, James F. Cook (Susan) of Harrisburg, Pa., Jeffrey L. Cook of High Point and Edward W. Cook (Kimberly) of Mooresville. Six grandchildren, Cameron, Justin, Dana, Joel, Spencer and Jenna Cook and one great grandchild, Tessa Marie Cook. Also surviving are two sisters, Nellie Ann Miller and E. Jeanne Hybert.
Services celebrating Helen's life will be conducted at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, July 26th at the Westmoreland Chapel of Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home with James F. Cook, her oldest son officiating. The Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. The pallbearers will be Justin Cook, Dana Cook, Joel Cook, Spencer Cook, Robert Hopkins and Jim Chambers. Helen's special friends and caregivers were Judy and Alan Monty. The family will receive friends at 11:00 am prior to the 12:00 noon service.
