It is with a mixture of sadness and joy that the family of Ava Margaret Christy Cook announces her home-going, which happened on Wednesday, December 19, 2018, only three weeks shy of her 103rd birthday. She was born January 8, 1916, the year America became involved in World War I, and she was fortunate to witness so many worldly events and family occasions throughout her life, all which stayed with her until she took her final breaths. She always made everyone feel welcome in her presence, and she was known for her smiles and hugs that she would freely give to anyone she met.
Margaret loved her family dearly, especially her husband, Ross, who died in 2010. They enjoyed 74 years of marriage, and, as they were childhood sweethearts, they were “a couple” a total of 86 years. Thus, their reunion in heaven must be extra special. She was also a loving mother and daughter, so she also is blessed to rejoin her son, Charles Cook, who preceded her in death only by a few months, and her parents, Junius A. Christy and Edna Lambert Christy. In addition, she was the last living of eight children, all who went on to glory before her: sisters, Vivian Cook, Thelma Turman, Colleen McCoy, Gladys Heath, and Maxine McBee, and brothers, Kenneth and Fleming Christy.
Moreover, she leaves behind several family members, who have many wonderful memories to treasure: a daughter, Shirley (Steve) Heintz of Statesville, a son, Ron (Judy) Cook of Waxhaw, and a daughter-in-law, Gwen Cook of Charlotte; as well as five grandchildren: Scott Heintz, Stephanie (Richard) Wood, Sarah (Phillip) Morrow, Marell (Austin) Paullins, and Andrew Cook; and five great-grandchildren: Alaina (Garrett) Harshbarger, Nathan Heintz, Gabe Heintz, Brinkley Morrow, and Braylen Morrow. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Marjorie Christy, of the Amity Hill community, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Margaret retired from Burlington Industries in Mooresville, NC, and she spent her golden years painting, quilting, and tending to her flower gardens, of which she took special care. She and Ross also enjoyed spending time with the senior groups in the Amity Hill community, especially the Keen-Agers at Back Creek Presbyterian Church. She loved cooking and baking, and, for many decades, her family enjoyed spending the fourth Sunday of each month at her home.
The family will be receiving friends at Bunch Johnson Funeral Home from 6:30-8:00 Friday evening, December 21, 2018. Interment will take place at the Iredell Memorial Gardens Mausoleum at 11:00am Saturday morning, December 22, 2018, and the Funeral service, a true celebration of life, will be held at Back Creek Presbyterian in Mt. Ulla, Saturday afternoon at 2:00 pm with Pastor Bill Thrailkill officiating.
Memorials can be made to Back Creek Presbyterian Church, 2145 Back Creek Church Road, Mount Ulla, NC, 28125, or Hospice and Palliative Care, 2347 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC, 28625.
The family would like to say a special thank you to all of the Hospice and Palliative Staff for their loving care over the years.
