

Mr. William Reid Summers, 87, of 415 Florence Circle, Statesville, died Monday August 1, 2011 at the Gordon Hospice House. Born in Iredell County on November 4, 1923, he was a son of the late Luther Neil Summers, Sr. and Annie Frye Summers. Reid was a Funeral Director and Embalmer, former part owner and Vice President of Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of Concord Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder, Deacon and Past President of the Men Of The Church. He was also a member of the American Legion and the V.F.W. He was Past President of the Statesville Optimist Club and the Statesville Shrine Club. He was a member of Statesville Lodge # 27 A.F. & A.M., the Statesville Shrine Club, and a member of the Statesville Elks Lodge # 1823. He enjoyed working on his farm and at one time was a member of the National and N.C. Cattleman's Association. He was a graduate of the Gupton-Jones College Of Mortuary Science in Nashville, Tenn. He was also a member of the N.C. Funeral Directors Association. He negotiated the purchase of the Reavis Funeral Home Of Harmony in 1981 merged that firm with Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home in 1988.
On January 18, 1947, he married the former Louise Lackey who survives. Also surviving is a son, Mark S. Summers of Newland and a brother, Neill Summers, Jr. of Mt. Airy.
He was preceded in death by a son, William Reid Summers, Jr., brothers : Coleman F. Summers, Henry C. Summers, Robert P. Summers and Wayne Summers and sisters : Mary Ellen Stikeleather, Reba S. Shuford and Gladys Summers.
Services celebrating Reid's life will be conducted at 11:00 Thursday at Westmoreland Chapel of Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home with Rev. Thomas Southern officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery with full military rites presented by the Iredell County Veterans Council Burial Detail.
The family will be assembled at the residence and will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 Wednesday at Bunch-Johson Funeral Home.
