Mary Catherine Shepherd went home to the Lord on December 22, 2023. She was 94 and was the last child of Claude W. Shepherd and Malissa Dimont Shepherd both deceased. Also previously deceased by Elizabeth "Shorty" Howard Shepherd, stepmother; brothers Lawrence Shepherd and Paul Shepherd; sisters Elizabeth "Lib" Shepherd Nesbit and Dorothy "Dot" Shepherd Harvey.
She is survived by sister, Roberta Shepherd Stutts and her husband, Douglas Stutts of Winston-Salem, NC; many uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews and numerous other relatives.
Mary Shepherd was born in Mooresville, NC, in 1929 and graduated high school in Cooleemee, NC, in 1947 as valedictorian of her class. A 1951 graduate of the North Carolina Baptist Hospital and School of Nursing in Winston-Salem, NC. She never married and spent her career as an operating room nurse in several locations across the country including Alexandria, VA, Oregon and finally Wilmington, NC. She retired to the Staunton, VA area in 1992 to live with her sister, Dot Harvey. They resided for many years at Gypsy Hill Place Independent Living.
After retiring she was a volunteer with the Augusta Health Thrift Shop in Staunton. She attended the Olivet Methodist Church on Richmond Road, Staunton.
Her stoic sense of humor, caring personality and affinity to reduce whole vegetables into tiny dices of culinary delights, will be sorely missed.
By Mary's request there will be no service and her ashes will be scattered in a special place she loved. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Augusta Free Clinic.
