Joseph Sauerzapf, a man whose life was a beautiful blend of faith, intellect, and adventure, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2026, at the age of 86. Born on September 28, 1939, Joe was a constant source of wisdom and warmth for everyone who knew him.
Joe’s spiritual journey led him to serve as an associate pastor at three different Catholic parishes across Chicago. His ministry was marked by compassion and a steady presence in the lives of his parishioners. The same spirit of care and compassion guided his long career with the American Cancer Society, from which he eventually retired, leaving behind a legacy of advocacy and support for those facing their most difficult chapters.
A passionate teacher, Joe shared his knowledge and guided young minds at Our Lady of Tepeyac High School and later at St. Augustine College. He was known for his ability to connect with students and his dedication to making education accessible and meaningful.
When not in the classroom or parish, Joe could often be found in the skies or on the airwaves. An accomplished pilot, he found great joy in aviation. Joe was a cofounder of a flying club that emphasized safety. He was also a long-time ham radio operator, known by his call sign K9HNL, connecting with people around the world from his home in Chicago.
Joe’s greatest pride was the beautiful life he built with his family. He was the devoted husband and lifelong partner of Maria Del Carmen Sauerzapf, with whom he shared a journey of deep faith and companionship. As a father, he was a constant source of strength and encouragement for his daughter, Mary Sauerzapf, who carries forward the quiet grace he showed everyone he met.
Perhaps his favorite title of all, however, was "Grandpa." His two granddaughters, Miamor and Vida Godinez, were the absolute light of his later years. Whether he was sharing stories of his days of adventure or simply enjoying their company, Joe’s heart was fullest when he was with them. He leaves behind a family who will forever be guided by his wisdom and warmed by his memory.
His life was a testament to the power of service, whether through faith, education, or the simple joy of connection.
