

Jo Ann Carey Reid Thompson Clower AKA Jo Ann C Thompson was born in Hugo, Oklahoma. Shortly after her birth, her mother passed away and she was raised by her sisters and brothers. Jo Ann was a Choctaw Indian. Her tribe was an original tribe that was forced to move along the path known as the “Trail of Tears” from Mississippi and relocated in Oklahoma. It was there that her Mother Susan Bacon met John Carey and her life began. She did her elementary school years in Hugo and then moved to Lawrenceville, Kansas to attend high school.
In her younger years, Jo Ann married Frankie Dusault Reid. They bore one son, Lawrence Frank Reid AKA Larry. A few years later she divorced and moved to Los Angeles, CA and began working for the Bureau of Indian Affairs as an accounting clerk. Unfortunately her son had medical respiratory problems and she advised to move to a dry climate. She then relocated to Phoenix, AZ. In Phoenix, she continued work for the BIA as a bookkeeper. In 1954 while in Phoenix she met a gentleman by the name of William Leo Thompson. Leo, as he was known, was from Pearsall, TX. However, Leo at the time was employed by Arabian American Oil Company in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. They married and the three of them left Phoenix in 1954 moving to Dhahran. The family lived there until 1963. Leo and Jo Ann moved one last time to Longview, TX. In May 1963, Leo Thompson passed away from Cancer. Jo Ann made one more move and it was to Chevy Chase, MD. While in Chevy Chase she worked for the Organization of American States as their Finance Officer. Late in life she remarried to a Mr. Frank M. Clower. Frank was in the field of construction. She moved to Oxen Hills, MD. A few years later, they divorced and Jo Ann moved back to Chevy Chase in 1986. Looking at other opportunities she began working for Lord and Taylor in Chevy Chase and worked there unit she was age 72. After working for Lord and Taylor she became heavily involved in the Chevy Chase United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School to the Children until the age of 80. She continued working with the church until she had a heart valve replacement in November 2006. JoAnn loved to go to the museums, read about the American Indian culture and was very religious with her readings. In January 2010 JoAnn had fallen and ended up in the hospital in Bethesda, MD. She completed her rehabilitation on the day the giant snow storm hit the District of Columbia in Feb 2010 and moved to Stockbridge, GA to live with her son Larry. JoAnn celebrated her 86th birthday at the Olive Garden Italian Restaurant in McDonough, GA.
