She was known throughout her life by her middle name “Juanita”, and was born on April 19, 1922 to Clara Robinson Worley and Edward Allison Worley. She was delivered at her family’s home on Confederate Avenue in the Grant Park neighborhood of Atlanta. She attended Annie West and Jerome Jones elementary schools, and Girl’s High School.
As a young woman Juanita worked at the CDC, Southern Bell, and Rich’s department store. She married George Felton Johnson, an army veteran of World War II on April 19, 1947.
After the birth of her son Larry Felton Johnson in 1951, Juanita and George bought a house on Ormewood Avenue, just a few feet around the corner from her childhood home, and she lived in that Grant Park house for the rest of her life.
In 1956 her second child, Cindy Clarice Johnson was born.
Juanita and George had a lifelong friendship with the couples who lived on both sides of their house, Frances and Clinton Hamilton, and Virginia and James Turpin. Even after the Hamiltons and Turpins moved to other parts of metro Atlanta, the friends continued their weekend card games for decades, and all three couples have adjacent gravesites.
Juanita is survived by her son and daughter, Larry Johnson of Mableton and Cindy Leake of Atlanta, her daughter-in-law Susan Lasher of Mableton, grandsons Daniel Johnson and Russell Leake and Russell’s wife Miriam Moon Leake, granddaughter Bernadette Johnson, great-grandchildren Alexander and Lillian Leake, and many nephews and nieces.
