Albert Malone Brown, Jr. was born on October 1, 1944 in Wilmington, North Carolina to the proud parents Doris Jean Ready Brown and Albert Malone Brown. “Skip,” as he was called by his childhood family, spent his first several years in Wilmington before moving to Washington, D.C. where he matured into his teenage years before becoming the second wave of his Ready/Brown family to migrate to California. In Stockton he graduated from Edison High School and then relocated back to the East Coast to attend Maryland State College. In January 1964 he helped his mother motor from Washington D.C. to Stockton, completing the fourth of five waves of his family’s migration to California. In 1985 he flew back to Washington D.C. to relocate his convalescing Dad to California, thus completing his family’s total migration to California.
In 1965 following his final relocation to Stockton he married his sweetheart, Etta Smith, and in 1966 they were blessed with their son, Albert Malone Brown, III. To support his young family Al worked in youth correctional services while obtaining his undergraduate degree from the University of the Pacific. After obtaining his undergraduate degree Al began his more than twenty-five year teaching career with Stockton Unified School District where he taught the fifth grade for many of those years. Additionally, while teaching with Stockton Unified he earned his Master’s Degree in 1979 from the University of San Francisco. During his college years Al pledged with the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity where he was active for many years.
During his youth Al had two significant passions that he would later make a reality in his adult life. One was owning a Harley-Davidson Motorcycle and the other was owning a home with enough land to maintain horses. Al was blessed to become a brand-new Dad in 1990 with the arrival of his son, Cameron A. Brown, and as Cameron grew older he could often be found bound to his Dad riding on the back of the Harley as they traveled to the Bay Area to visit Al’s parents. Even later in life Al was fortunate enough to purchase a ranch-style house located on enough land to maintain horses as he always wanted. It was in that ranch-styled house with the land for the horses that he cherished his final years with his new bride, Tina Jones Brown.
Al became a member of the Mt. Pleasant M.B. Church and worked faithfully for many years as Chairman of the Deacon Board and as a Trustee of the Church. Additionally, he had cherished affiliations with Stockton Black Family Day, Incorporated, the Black Cowboys Organization, the Juneteenth Foundation and he was a lifetime member of the N.A.A.C.P. where he was a former Vice President of the Stockton Chapter and a recipient of the Medgar Evers Freedom Fighter Hall of Fame award in 2014.
Al is survived by his wife, Tina Jones Brown; sons Albert M. Brown, III, Cameron A.
