Deacon Washington was born December 27, 1939 in Idabell, Oklahoma to Jeffrey and Ada B Washington. Deacon Washington moved to Dekalb, Texas in 1948 and graduated from Marvin Pine High School. Deacon Washington joined the U.S. Army in 1962 and was stationed in Germany along with his older brother Condia whom he had a close relationship with throughout his life. Condia affectionately called him Doc. Deacon Washington moved to California at age 18 and had a career with Best Fertilizer until he retired.
Deacon Washington came to know the Lord at an early age. He was baptized at St. Paul Baptist Church in Dekalb, Texas. He continued to be faithful to the Lord and became a deacon at Amazing Grace Missionary Baptist Church in Stockton, CA.
Bro. Washington joined the Most Worshipful Sons of Light Grand Lodge, Ancient Free and Accepted Mason, Jurisdiction of California in 1990. He was elevated to Inspector General for the 33rd and last degree of Masonry. He also served as Grand Treasurer (2017-2019) and held other positions too numerous to list. Bro. Washington was Worshipful Master of James C. Mitchell Lodge in Stockton, CA until he became ill and was no longer able to perform his duties. Bro. Washington also spearheaded and chaired the Annual Red & White Sphinx Ball at the Hilton Hotel in Stockton, CA. Terrestrial Journey in Freemasonry ended January 19, A.L. 6021, A.D. 2021.
Deacon Washington was a proud and well-dressed man who loved the Lord and his family. He could always be depended on to lend a helping hand to family and friends. Deacon Washington was also a great cook and his BBQ was the best. Deacon Washington was a staunch 49ers fan, an avid fisherman, and skilled Dominoes player. He was very competitive and used to get really worked up when his wife Shirley played the wrong bone.
Deacon Washington is preceded in death by his parents Jeffrey Washington and Ada B Howell, his beloved son Henry L. Washington, Jr., his brother Doyle Smith, his sisters Carrie Ann Smith, Dorothy Smith, and Theresa Warren, father-in-law John W. Caldwell, and niece Tamika “Joy” Ellington.
Deacon Washington leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife Shirley A Washington, his daughters Debra L. Russell (Steve Sr.) and Sharmaine D. Barnes (Fred), grandchildren Steven Jr. and Stephanie Russell, Nicolette, Henry III, and Henrihanna Washington, and Trenton Kimble, great-grandchildren Jaylen, Jeremiah, and Kyree Russell, step-mother Betty Washington, brothers Condia Washington (Vicky), Walter Howell (Sandra), Andrew Howell, Jr., and Johnny Washington, sisters Georgia Smith, Bobby Jackson, Etta Antwine (Mike), Peggy Dismuke (Marlon), and Juanita McClelland, daughter-in-law Rebecca Washington, mother-in-law Irene Caldwell, sister-in-law Renee Appling, dear friend and adopted brother Cleve Jenkins, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, co-workers, and friends too numerous to name.
