Alice Sokol

SOKOL, Alice (Alexandra) May 13, 1930 – June 2, 2026. It is with profound sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Alice Sokol (formerly of Stony Plain) on June 2, 2026, with family by her side. Her memory will be lovingly cherished by her children, Alexis, Barry (Karen), Ben (Amanda), Linda (Gerry), and Karen; her grandchildren, Lydia, Everett, Shae, and Caine; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Alex, parents Gregory and Maria Onyschuk, stepmother Francis, and her three brothers, Dan, Mark, and Steve. Alice immigrated to Canada from Ukraine in 1937. Her family settled on a homestead on the south side of Wabamun Lake in the community of Sundance where she met Alex who lived on a neighboring homestead. They married in 1948, operated their mixed farm, and together raised five children. In 1967, TransAlta (then Calgary Power) purchased their farm in order to construct the Sundance Power Plant and mine the coal in the area. This resulted in a move to a farm south of Stony Plain where Alice and Alex continued to farm up until 1992 when they retired, rented out the farm, and moved into Stony Plain. In 2010, they moved to a seniors’ residence in south Edmonton. Alex passed away in 2018 from Alzheimer’s. In 2024, Alice was transferred from the Rutherford Heights Seniors’ Residence to Allen Gray, a long-term care facility where she resided and continued to be cared for by her long-time personal companion and friend, Epiphanie, until her passing.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, August 20, 2026, at 11 a.m. at the Stony Plain & Parkland Pioneer Museum (Founders’ Building) 5120 - 41 Ave., Stony Plain, with luncheon to follow. Cremation has taken place. In memory of Alice, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation (heartandstroke.ca/donations), the Alzheimer's Society of Alberta (alzheimer.ca), the Stony Plain Pioneer Museum, or to an Animal Shelter of your choice.
