Dale Bernard Hagen of Spruce Grove, Alberta, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2026 at the age of 83, with his beloved wife, Una, holding his hand, and his dear daughters Susan and Stacey by his side.
Dale was born to Bernard and Frances Hagen in Galahad, Alberta. He met his father for the first time at the age of two, when Bernard returned home from World War II. Dale grew up in Round Hill, Alberta, and the tales he told of the people who lived there and the adventures they had could make for the next Great Canadian Novel. A sportsman at heart, and a natural athlete, Dale excelled in curling, and baseball – sports that he enjoyed his entire life.
Soon after graduating high school, Dale headed far north to trade for the Hudson’s Bay Company. People who heard his deep baritone voice would not be surprised to learn he also took a turn as a disc jockey at a radio station there. Upon returning from the north, Dale moved to Wetaskiwin, Alberta and began a career in the insurance industry – an industry in which Dale made an impact for over 50 years.
It was also in Wetaskiwin where Dale met the love of his life, Una Forth. They married and raised their daughters in the home they built in Spruce Grove, which remains the family home to this day.
Dale was a true outdoorsman – he loved fishing, target shooting, cribbage, and camping, almost as much as he loved sharing these pursuits with family and friends. He was a master woodworker who could tell the species of wood blindfolded, a car enthusiast who could tell the make, model, and year of a vehicle a mile away, and a handyman who could fix almost anything.
Dale will be fondly remembered for his gentle nature, his Norwegian sense of humour, spelling, and grammar, and his unparalleled generosity. To say that he was a gentleman is an understatement. Dale was truly one of the good guys.
Dale is survived by his wife Una (nee Forth), daughters Susan (Tim), and Stacey, grandchildren Tristan (Aleace), Patrick (Audrey), and Daisy, and so many adored family, colleagues, neighbours, and lifelong friends.
A celebration of Dale Hagen’s life will be held at 10:00 am on July 9, 2026, at Parkland Funeral Services, 3205-44 Avenue, Stony Plain, Alberta, with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Light Up Your Life Society at the Westview Health Centre Hospice in Stony Plain, Alberta, the Alberta Cancer Foundation, or the Pleasington Historical Society in Forestburg, Alberta.
