     A number of years ago I had the privilege to go with Dylan and his dad Ron on a 6 day hike to Machu Picchu in Peru. The purpose of the trip was to take some of the ashes from Dylans opa (grandfather) to the lost city and spread them there. Opa had always wanted to do the hike with his kids or grandkids.
     After about 3 days of hiking we came to one of the camps that were set up along the trail and after a quick supper the guide told us that there was a glacial lake at the top of the mountain we were staying on - those who had the energy after the days hike were invited to climb up there and see the lake for themselves. A group of us set out and one by one they gave up and headed back to camp due to the steepness and the altitude. Pretty soon there was just me and Dylan left and I was seriously thinking of heading back for a rest myself. Dylan coaxed me to keep going telling me that it wasnt that much further and we could make it if we just kept going! I was thinking wow this guy has stamina and perseverance! As we ascended up the mountain the air was getting so thin that every 40 feet or so we had to take a break feeling like we had just run a marathon, but we encouraged each other to keep going.
     Finally we reached our goal and were rewarded with a beautiful clear lake. We just stood there for a while to take it all in. The funny part was that on the way back down we met up with another guy who was trying to get to the lake . He was about 2/3 the way up and he was ready to give up but he asked if i had a picture of the lake so he could see it for himself. Before i had a chance to refuse the request Dylan pulled out his phone and showed him pictures of the lake showing compassion to the hiker.
      We all have certain goals in life and we need people like Dylan to coax and encourage us when times get tough...
     We all need some compassion when our goals are impossible.
      R.I.P. Dylan you will be missed
     


To all of us who knew and loved Dylan,

Since I am currently out of the country I will not be attending the service but I thought the least I could do is write something to express my sadness over his passing. 

Dylan and I met at Dow in Fort Saskatchewan. He was the type of person who makes an immediate impression. I remember him on his first day. Firm hand shake, big smile, quiet but not introverted. I liked him right away. But, what’s with the hair??? - I said to him "those are some crazy curls that you sport dude!  Hi, I am Thierry Kidd;  Welcome aboard." 

During the following years, he surely found a home with us. He was one of the pillars of our team and achieved his second red seal ticket. He was just gifted. All the guys loved working with him, they valued and respected his skills but were also afraid of the ingenious & elaborate pranks he would pull on them. 

The thing that impressed me the most about him was his positivity. We would be in a stressful situation at work and he would laugh it off. He was also the type of guy who was wired funny! Instead of running away from challenges like most people do; he would embrace the opportunity and give his best all the time. Not too many people go put out fires in their spare time. 

Sadly, my friend is gone. We last chatted on August 16th.  It was mostly nonsense, just like we always did. Hearing his passing angered me; I am powerless and feel crushed. The hardest thing is to carry on knowing we lost a real gem. My heart goes out to Allysha, Evelyn and  the rest of his family.

With broken hearts 💔 we say good journey our friend. Your smile was always contagious and laugh that enlightened any room.  Our trip to Jamaica will be forever cherished, with a chess game that will never be the same without you. Forever in our hearts and never forgotten. 

We didn't  know Dylan well. But we had been close to Rose and Ron. As I read the actulaties about Dylan I think of his parents and family  and reflect on them as his amazing life as a man ...husband.. and father. Out hearts  go out to his wife and daughter  and Rose..Ron.and Kim. 

Keep on shining your bright light in the after life Dylan! I can still see you prancing around in your neon green Borat suit and kicking it ol school to “I’m sexy and I know it”.  Keep shining your light on Allysha and Evelyn.  Two strong beautiful ladies whom will need your love surrounding them as they  walk this journey. My sincere condolences to the entire Holick and Deweerd family.  

Dylan Derweerd: just truly one of a kind. You had an incredible vibe and energy about you, and I will never forget the way you would say: “Yeah, man!”

Although I didn’t see you enough in the latter years, you were always a dear and loyal person to me. I will never forget the memories we shared together, and I know when you weren’t making them with me you were changing the lives of so many others—especially your daughter, Eveline, and your wonderful wife, Allysha.

You were too good for this world. Go bike and board the galaxies, my dude.

Dylan, what can I say? You were an amazing man, and I will always remember your big smile that could lighten a room. You were always a pleasure to be around and you had so much positive energy to you. You will be missed!

We never had the pleasure of meeting or knowing your Dylan, but know that our hearts share the sadness of your loss. Let your grief remind you that you were afforded the opportunity to love Dylan so much..... for as long as you could and after. Help Evelyn keep her Daddy in her memories, and we hope that all of your memories can become your comfort and happiness in time to come. Find peace in your own time. We love you.

When I think of Dylan, I think of the good ol’ days. We shared so many memories, and some of the most treasured memories in my life. Between Dylan, Kim, and my brother Aaron and I. I am deeply saddened and broken hearted to hear about the sudden passing of Dylan. He was such a great guy. Condolences to everyone near and dear. Family and friends. Wife, and daughter. ♥️

We spent so much time together. It is regrettable that I only have a handful of pictures of us together - but I think that is because you and I would put our phones aside whenever we were together. So that’s cool in it’s own way. Dylan, you were a brother from different blood, whenever I came to your home I felt like I was apart of a second family. I could think of a thousand different memories to put here but all I know is that there never will be another person who so randomly came into my life, perfectly synced up with me, and trended towards manhood at the same pace as one another. 

You always supported and encouraged my direction, and I loved seeing you become a perfect father and husband. We were each other’s top cheerleaders as weird as that sounds. And though we saw one another lesser over that past couple years, neither of us  became spiteful of that fact. Instead, our phone calls became more excited, more vibrant, more energized. And when we would finally meet at the Yosts for relaxed beers around the table? Those became my favourite moments. Simple yet incredible. 

Your loss didn’t begin to sink in until an hour ago when I was checking to see if my suit fit for Saturday. It feels like a huge hole in the town. But I promise you man, If any of your loved ones ever need any support of any kind, I will be there unconditionally - it’s what you would have done for me. Please come by from time to time, let us know you’re around.

I love you man. 

We were so saddened to hear of Dylan's passing.  He was such a dear, lifelong, friend to our son, Steven.  As a teenager, Dylan used to come to our house in Lamorra Landing.  We remember him as being polite, kind and always so respectful... such a nice young man.
