Elmer Frank SHUKALEK

Passed away on 8 March, 2020

Elmer Frank Shukalek 1946 - 2020

It is with the deepest of sorrow that the family of Mr. Elmer Shukalek of Spruce Grove, AB announces his passing on March 8, 2020 at the age of 74 years. Elmer was raised in Ispas, Alberta. He was one of 14 children born to John and Mary Shukalak (nee: Nahamko). Elmer left school early to help his family. At age 20 he married Pamela Doyle. Together they raised a son and daughter, Wesley and Colleen. Elmer, who was gifted with mechanical skills, business sense, determination and a remarkable work ethic, became a mechanic working in various places such as Suncor in Fort McMurray. He then became owner of an Edmonton- based radiator shop, Western Radiator Ltd. When he retired Elmer became an active member of the Leduc West Antique Society, sharing his love of mechanics and our Albertan heritage by restoring and exhibiting antique engines and tractors as well as threshing and sawmilling. Elmer also loved to travel and visited many countries including New Zealand, Australia, the Cook Islands, Cuba, Mexico, Fiji, Vietnam, Germany and Poland…not bad for a small-town Alberta boy.

In December 2016, after a seemingly successful battle with Non Hodgkins lymphoma, Elmer suffered a stroke. The stroke caused dementia and other limitations, but he was more kind, generous and loving than ever. He still found pleasure in the outdoors and with his wife, his children, his son-in-law Brian Gibb, and his grandchildren Katrina and Hudson.

Elmer was predeceased by his mother; father; one sister, Elaine; and three brothers, Billy, Bernie, and Greg.

A Memorial Service will be held for Elmer at a later date.

If friends desire, Memorial Donations may be made in Elmer’s memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 144, 5241 Calgary Trail NW Edmonton, AB T6H 5G8.

I met Elmer when he joined the Leduc West Antique Society . He volunteered his time and expertise for many years. He maintained all of our tractors and lawn mowers for many years. I also remember riding out to Breton with him one year when the Breton Fire Department donated a fire truck to LWAS and Elmer drove it back to LWAS. He built our clay oven and when it gave out he asked me to help him rebuild it and we use it every year to bake cinnamon buns at our show in July. Elmer and his son Wes ran the saw mill for many years and kept it in tip top shape. He helped with many other projects and served on our executive a number of years. All the best Elmer . I will miss you

Auntie Pam, Colleen, Wes, Brian and all of the rest of the family,
Just wanted to send you my most heartfelt condolences on your loss. Uncle Elmer was always so kind to me growing up in Fort McMurray , I got to spend a lot of time with him and his family and I feel close to you all because of this. I have many memories of his smile, laughter, awesome stories and great Ukranian food. He was a very intelligent man who was very talented in so many ways. He came to watch Jayden play hockey. He took us out for dinner one time when we visited him and Auntie Pam in Edmonton and told me many funny stories. At one of the family reunions he helped Dave buy and replace a tire on our tent trailer and believe me that was such a huge help to us. He just stepped in and helped. We had no need to ask. He just helped because that was the kind of person he was. I am sad that I cannot come to his funeral. I want to give you all the biggest of hugs and tell you that I am here for you always. Although we don't see each other often, you are my family and I love you all so very much and wish you peace and comfort at this difficult time of loss.
