Gerald was a lifelong cattle farmer and proud commercial cattle breeder, raising both Angus and Hereford cattle and everything in between. He took great pride in his animals and his land, working tirelessly to build the farm and life he loved. But beyond farming, Gerald was known as a true community man. Whether over coffee at the local shop or around a backyard BBQ, he loved visiting with neighbours, sharing stories, lending a hand, and quietly helping anyone in need — whether it was delivering feed or helping ship cattle.
Gerald’s homemade family-recipe sausage became a tradition everyone looked forward to. His passion for simple, honest work and his genuine care for others left a lasting impact on those around him.
Gerald leaves behind his loving wife of many years, Laura Henkel; his children: Lee Henkel (wife Annette) and their children Brenden, Gavin, and Landon, Travis Henkel and his children Riley and Elaysia (predeceased infant son Jude), Brett Henkel (wife Louise) and their children Joshua, Benjamin, and Tyler his son-in-law Donnie Erechuk and grandson Jesse, following the loss of Gerald’s beloved daughter Misty Erechuk in August of 2024.
Gerald was predeceased by his siblings Arthur, Laverne, Mavis, and Merle, as well as his parents, John and Bertha Henkel. He is survived by his sister Paulette Nelson and brother Brian Henkel.
His family takes comfort knowing that Gerald’s legacy of hard work, community spirit, and quiet generosity lives on through those he touched.
