It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Helmut Kollross, who left this world in 2025 at the age of 77. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, teacher, and artist, Helmut’s life was defined by kindness, curiosity, and a profound love for the people around him.
Helmut is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Colleen, with whom he shared a lifetime of partnership, laughter, and unwavering support. He leaves behind his son Michael (Pam), his daughter Kathryn (Darren), and his cherished grandchildren Amanda, Justin, Matthew, and Sam, each of whom brought him immense pride and joy. He will also be fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and countless friends whose lives he touched with his warmth and generosity.
He was predeceased by his parents, Ruth and Josef, and his brother Herbert, all of whom he held close in memory throughout his life.
In his early years, Helmut spent significant time working in Fort McMurray in the oilsands, contributing his skills and strong work ethic to Suncor, Syncrude, and Albian Sands. He also worked in the mines in Hinton, Alberta, with Obed Mountain Coal and Cardinal River Coal. These experiences helped shape both his character and his professional path, and he often spoke fondly of the people he met and the challenges he embraced during that time.
In his later years, Helmut was especially proud of his work with SCMA, where he served as an online instructor, teaching students across Canada. He found great fulfillment in helping learners grow, and this role allowed him to continue sharing his knowledge and passion with people from coast to coast.
Helmut was known by all who met him as a man of exceptional kindness. A true family man, he dedicated himself to nurturing, supporting, and uplifting those he loved. He had a natural gift for teaching—sharing knowledge not to impress, but to empower. Whether guiding family, students, or friends, he approached every lesson with patience and enthusiasm.
His passions found vibrant expression in his artwork. Helmut was a gifted creator, working in ink, stained glass, and woodcarving. His pieces reflected both his technical skill and his deep appreciation for detail, beauty, and craftsmanship. Outside of his art, he found joy in gardening, tending the earth with the same care he offered to the people in his life.
Energetic, intelligent, and endlessly curious, Helmut approached life with open hands and an open heart. His legacy lives on in the family he loved so dearly, the wisdom he shared, the art he created, and the memories treasured by all who knew him.
