(BA with Honours in English, LLB)
With broken hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Roy Allen Zinger, aged 68, at his home, after a short but valiant battle with cancer (mesothelioma). Beloved and survived by his wife and soulmate, Liz Turnbull; mother, Ellen R. Zinger; seven siblings, Cathy, Mary, Ellen A. (Jan), Janet, Rob (Elaine), Carol (Glenn), and Emily; as well as many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Roy was predeceased by his father, Dick Zinger, in 1982.
Born in Whitehorse, Yukon, he grew up in Castor, Alberta, and moved with his family to Edmonton at age 16. Roy was a brilliant jack-of-all-trades, an avid reader especially of history, and a fascinating story teller. He practiced criminal law in Edmonton from 1986 to 2000, when he retired. Roy and Liz moved to their lovely lake home in the Summer Village of Silver Sands in 2006, thriving on the peaceful environment there. Roy loved animals, domestic and wild, and developed a deep knowledge of caring for them, sharing that wisdom with anyone who wanted to know. He was also known as one of the “go-to” guys in the Village for anyone who wanted help figuring out to do/make something. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
At Roy’s request there will be no funeral service. Deepest gratitude to all of the care providers who he encountered in this journey, with particular appreciation to Dr. Quincy Chu, Elizabeth Gaetz RN, and Dr. Steve Follett at the Cross Cancer Institute.
If desired, Memorial Donations may be made in Roy’s memory to the Cross Cancer Institute (11560 University Ave, Edmonton, AB T6G 1Z2)
