It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of William (Bill) Deffey, aged 82, on Wednesday, August 13, 2025. Bill passed away peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by family, after a long and courageous battle with lung cancer.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Joanna Deffey; children Renee Naismith (Archie) and Hal Deffey; grandchildren Alex Deffey (Alex), Tammy van Beek (Martin), and Jo Deffey (Jeff); and great-grandchild Sam Deffey. He is also survived by his brother Brian Deffey, sister Peggy Bull (Ted), along with numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Bill was predeceased by his parents Ada and Joe Deffey, his sisters Vera Deffey and Grace Manners, and brother-in-law Hedley Manners.
Born on November 18, 1942, in rural Saskatchewan, Bill was known as a steadfast and devoted family man who embodied strength, reliability, and love throughout his life. He had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and could often be found boating, fishing, or tinkering on projects in his garage or backyard. His hands were never idle, and his quiet dependability made him the anchor of the family.
A proud member of the Operating Engineers Union Local 955 for more than 30 years, Bill took great pride in his work and often reflected on the job sites, colleagues, and experiences that shaped his career. His stories and fond memories remained a constant source of joy until his final days.
Bill’s legacy will live on in the values he instilled: strength, hard work, loyalty, and an unwavering commitment to family.
In accordance with Bill’s wishes, no funeral service will be held. A Celebration of Life is planned for late September, with details to be shared in the coming weeks.
